Germany has called for a significant strengthening of European defence capabilities following the United States’ decision to withdraw thousands of troops from the country, a move that has heightened concerns about security and transatlantic relations.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius described the development as a “wake-up call” for Europe, stressing that the continent must take greater responsibility for its own security. “We Europeans must take on more responsibility for our own security,” he said, emphasizing the need for increased defence spending and faster military procurement.

The US government has announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany within the next six to twelve months, reducing its long-standing military presence in Europe.  The move follows growing tensions between Washington and its European allies over issues including the Iran conflict and trade disputes.

Germany, which hosts one of the largest contingents of US forces in Europe, sees the withdrawal as a pivotal moment for NATO and European security strategy. Officials say it reinforces the urgency for Europe to build stronger, more independent defence systems while still maintaining alliance cooperation.

NATO has acknowledged the development, noting that discussions are ongoing with Washington to understand the full implications of the troop reduction. The alliance also reiterated the need for European nations to increase defence investment and play a larger role in collective security.

Analysts warn that the US decision could reshape the balance of military power in Europe, particularly at a time of heightened tensions with Russia and broader geopolitical instability. Some European leaders have expressed concern that the drawdown may weaken deterrence capabilities, while others see it as an opportunity to accelerate long-planned military reforms.

Germany has already begun expanding its military ambitions, with plans to strengthen its armed forces and position itself as a leading defence power within Europe. The latest developments are expected to further push European nations toward deeper military cooperation and increased defence spending.

The troop withdrawal marks a significant shift in US foreign policy priorities and underscores a broader trend of Europe moving toward greater strategic autonomy in defence matters.
