Iranian oil tankers turned back as US blockade disrupts Hormuz traffic

Several Iranian oil tankers have been forced to turn back in recent days after encountering a U.S.-led naval blockade, as traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz drops to near standstill levels.

Shipping and satellite data show that at least six Iranian oil tankers carrying crude were redirected back toward Iranian ports, highlighting the growing impact of the blockade on Tehran’s export capacity.

The disruption has significantly reduced activity along one of the world’s most critical energy routes. Where between 125 and 140 vessels typically pass through the strait daily, recent figures show as few as seven ships making the transit, with none carrying oil for export to global markets.

The United States imposed the blockade earlier this month as part of broader efforts to pressure Iran amid ongoing conflict and stalled diplomatic negotiations. Since then, dozens of vessels have reportedly been intercepted or turned back, including ships far beyond the Gulf region.

The situation has created ripple effects across global energy markets. Iran is now struggling to move its crude, resorting to temporary storage measures such as holding oil on tankers or using improvised facilities inland.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high in and around the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles roughly a fifth of the world’s oil shipments. Iran has also imposed its own restrictions on maritime movement, further complicating navigation and raising risks for commercial shipping.

Despite occasional attempts by some vessels to bypass restrictions and continue toward Asian markets, the overall flow of oil has sharply declined. Analysts warn that the continued standoff could deepen supply disruptions, drive up global oil prices, and increase the risk of broader economic fallout.
