Portable Cheats Death as Brake Failure Forces Car into Ditch Before Son’s Naming Ceremony

Nigerian street-pop artist Portable is counting his blessings after narrowly escaping a serious car accident on Thursday night in Ogun State, just hours before his newborn son’s naming ceremony. The singer, known for hits like “Zazu Zeh,” experienced a terrifying brake failure while driving, an incident that could have turned fatal had circumstances been slightly different.

According to videos shared on the singer’s Instagram story, the accident occurred when Portable lost control of the vehicle after the brakes stopped responding. In a desperate attempt to avoid slamming into another car, he made the quick decision to steer his car into a roadside ditch. In a trembling but grateful voice, he recounted the harrowing experience to his fans. “My fans, join me in thanking God. I was just driving out this evening when the accident happened. I am fine; I came out unhurt,” Portable said in the video. “I suddenly realised that the brakes had failed. My people have arrived here. I thank God they are not here to collect my corpse. Nothing do me oo.”

The singer also highlighted a specific fear he had during the crash, noting that the location and timing could have made the accident far more severe. He expressed relief that no heavy-duty trucks were passing at the exact moment he lost control. “I have already bought two cows for my son’s naming ceremony. Thank God the accident didn’t happen while a trailer was passing on the road,” he added. The singer further used the moment to appeal to the government, referring to the road as dangerous and urging authorities to fix it.

The naming ceremony was intended to celebrate the arrival of his son, Fijabi, with his wife Bewaji. Interestingly, Bewaji gave birth on May 1, 2026, a date that coincided with Portable’s highly publicized celebrity boxing match against streamer Carter Efe. Despite the pre-ceremony accident, reports indicate that the family went ahead with the celebration, having already distributed free Ankara aso ebi fabrics to guests.
