South African Premier Division side Chippa United has confirmed the release of Nigerian international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, following a request from the player, despite his recent contract extension with the club.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper, who remains one of Nigeria’s most talked-about goalkeepers, had only signed a three-year contract extension in 2024, an agreement that was meant to keep him at the club until 2029.

However, Chippa United has opted to grant his request, bringing an early end to the deal.

Nwabali’s decision has sparked widespread conversation across African football circles, with the club trending online as fans react to the rare move.

The goalkeeper’s last competitive appearance for Chippa United came in October 2025, during a goalless draw against Magesi.

Shortly after that fixture, reports emerged that he had picked up an injury; an issue that briefly cast doubt over his availability for Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.

Although Nwabali later played through the reported injury, he has not featured for Chippa United since November 4, 2025.Since news of his release broke, Nwabali has been strongly linked with several clubs across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca and South African powerhouse Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.

He has also attracted interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, as well as English Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

Nwabali joined Chippa United in 2022 from Nigerian side Katsina United on an initial four-year contract scheduled to expire in 2026.

His performances, particularly his commanding presence and shot-stopping ability, earned him a contract extension in 2024. Yet, less than two years later, the goalkeeper sought an exit, one that the club ultimately sanctioned.

The decision contrasts sharply with similar situations at European clubs such as Napoli and Atalanta, where players’ exit requests have recently been resisted.

Chippa United’s willingness to terminate Nwabali’s contract has therefore been viewed by many as a player-friendly move.

As speculation continues to spin around his next destination, Nigerian football fans are hopeful that the Super Eagles goalkeeper secures a move to a bigger European league.

At 29, many believe this moment represents a crucial window for Nwabali to test himself at a higher level, whether in Europe or elsewhere.

For now, his future remains unresolved, but one thing is clear: Stanley Nwabali’s next move will be closely watched.
