BAYELSA GOVT TO EMPOWER SOILLESS FARMERS

The Bayelsa State government has announced plans to support trainees of its Soilless Farming Scheme to boost food production and food security in the state. Governor Douye Diri made this known on Wednesday when he received 180 soilless farming trainees at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House, Yenagoa. The Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, stated that the farmers were trained in Ogun State by the Bayelsa government in collaboration with Master Card. Governor Diri emphasized that his administration prioritizes food security, aiming to produce food not only for Bayelsans but also for other states. Daniel Alabrah stated that Governor Diri tasked the trainees not to disappoint the government, as they have a great role to play in technical farming in the state. The governor also announced the setup of a committee comprising the Commissioners for Agriculture, Finance, and Youth Development to ensure the trainees practice what they learned. Alabrah noted that Governor Diri urged the trainees to make good use of their training to become self-employed and train others. The governor applauded MasterCard and the Commissioner for Youth Development for facilitating the program. In a statement, Governor Diri said, “We know the importance of agriculture and food, and we want to produce food to feed Bayelsa people and even beyond. You are our next generation of technical farmers in our state.” Daniel Alabrah stated that the Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Kemepado, thanked the governor for approving the training of the youths. Kemepado expressed optimism that the application of the training would enhance the quest for food security in the state. One of the beneficiaries, Tari Adamawa, stated that they were trained in farming techniques that require the use of any available space. Adamawa said, as pioneers of soilless farming from Bayelsa, they are ready to put the knowledge acquired into practice to enhance food security in the state.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has inaugurated six newly constructed secondary schools in Yenagoa, the state capital, declaring that his administration’s legacy projects will speak for him after his tenure. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor emphasized his commitment to addressing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. Diri stated that upon assuming office, he identified a critical shortage of school facilities and promptly approved the construction of new schools across Yenagoa. The newly inaugurated schools are located in Biogbolo, Yenezue-Epie, Ovom, Ekeki, Akenfa, and Igbogene communities, with a combined student population of 4,628. Speaking during the joint inauguration ceremony at Government Secondary School, Biogbolo, Diri said his administration prioritizes human capacity development and will continue to invest in programs that instill the right values and skills in children. He urged students to maximize the facilities, noting that many of his peers lacked such opportunities yet excelled in various professions. “For us, it is an opportunity to serve, and we believe these projects will speak for us. The schools we have built, the children we have trained, and the empowerment initiatives for youths and women are the legacies that will endure,” Diri said. He listed other achievements, including road infrastructure, a new stadium, a secretariat complex, and gas turbines for electricity generation. According to Alabrah, Diri disclosed that the approval for new schools was prompted by overcrowding in existing institutions like Bishop Dimeari Grammar School and St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School, which fell short of the United Nations’ recommended student-teacher ratio. “Today, we are inaugurating six of such schools, bringing the total to eight in Yenagoa, including those previously built in Ogbogoro and Swali,” he added. The governor provided a breakdown of student enrollment in the new schools: Biogbolo (1,000), Igbogene (361), Ekeki (450), Ovom (883), Akenfa (1,237), and Yenezue-Epie (679). He also highlighted his approval of N16 billion for school renovations and the signing of a law increasing teachers’ retirement age from 60 to 65 years. Diri warned truant teachers to either recommit to their duties or resign, stressing that the government would not tolerate absenteeism. Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, praised the governor for transforming the state’s education landscape by expanding access beyond the two prominent schools in Yenagoa. Meanwhile, the paramount ruler of Biogbolo, His Royal Highness Frank Amos, speaking on behalf of other benefiting communities, lauded Diri for the initiative, noting that Yenezue-Epie was getting its first secondary school. GOVERNOR DIRI WARNS AGAINST PLOT TO DISRUPT PEACE IN BAYELSA

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has raised an alarm over a plot to disrupt the peace in the state, urging security commanders, elders, traditional rulers, and youths to remain vigilant. In In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Alabrah, on Thursday, March 27, 2025, the governor warned that the state government would not tolerate any actions capable of undermining the prevailing tranquility in Bayelsa. Alabrah stated that Diri issued the warning on Thursday during separate meetings with the Bayelsa Elders Council and the 37th session of the state security council. He expressed concerns over a planned mega rally and inauguration of a group loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a potential trigger for avoidable crisis. The governor also accused a suspended member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George Turnah, of attempting to create factions within the party in the state. Diri emphasized that holding such an event amid heightened ethnic tensions in Rivers State could escalate into conflict in Bayelsa. He noted that the alarm became necessary following Wike’s alleged threat to instigate crisis in PDP-governed states. “Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted,” Diri stated. He urged security agencies to remain alert while calling on parents and traditional rulers to dissuade youths from being used by troublemakers. According to Alabrah the governor insisted that the peaceful nature of the Ijaw people should not be mistaken for weakness, vowing that Bayelsa, as the homeland of all Ijaws, would not tolerate unrest orchestrated by faceless groups. “This is not Rivers State. Bayelsa is the cradle of every Ijaw man. Being peaceful is not cowardice. We are very courageous and can stand up for the truth at all times,” Diri declared. He further warned that no public facility in the state would be used for unauthorized activities without government approval. During the meeting with the elders, Diri assured them of prudent management of the state’s resources. Addressing the ongoing electricity blackout, he attributed it to vandalized towers in Rivers State but promised collaboration with relevant agencies to restore power. He also revealed plans to employ 1,000 Bayelsans into the civil service, acknowledging the high number of applicants received. Speaking during the 5th anniversary dinner of the Senator Diri administration, Dame Jonathan noted that since Diri assumed office, there has been unity among past and present leaders of the state across party lines. The Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, issued a statement on the event, which took place at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa on Friday night. In the statement, Dame Jonathan expressed delight over the presence of leaders of the state at the dinner despite political differences, saying it was a testament to the governor’s peaceful and accommodating disposition. Alabrah stated that Dame Jonathan stressed the need for people of the state to close ranks and support the administration, saying a state divided against itself cannot develop. In a goodwill message, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. DIRI INAUGURATES PROJECTS AS HE MARKS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY IN OFFICE

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has flagged off a series of projects to mark his fifth anniversary in office. The projects include the inauguration of the Road 24 High Profile Road, Okaka in Yenagoa, the state capital, and a statewide free medical outreach. In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Alabrah, noted that the Road 24 High Profile Road was inaugurated by the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu. Alabrah said Otu commended Governor Diri for making judicious use of the state’s revenues from the federation allocation. Daniel Alabrah stated that Governor Diri also flagged off a statewide free medical outreach in Ikarama community in Yenagoa Local Government Area. The governor noted that the anniversary of his administration was usually preceded by medical outreaches because healthcare delivery was its priority. “We cannot be talking about prosperity without taking care of our health. That is why we always started our anniversaries with a medical outreach,” Diri said. Alabrah stated that the medical outreach provided free medical intervention for indigent patients, including minor surgeries, polio vaccination, and distribution of treated mosquito nets. The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, said the outreach provided the opportunity to formally open the hospital for use after years of abandonment. Alabrah noted that the governor advised the community to protect the facility and cooperate with staff to ensure its smooth operations. The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Marcus Oluwadare, thanked Governor Diri for his support to health partners, saying that the state had successfully tackled five health outbreaks in 2024.

DIRI SEEKS ECONOMIC TIES BETWEEN AFRICA’S SUB-NATIONALS

Diri emphasized that centralised motor parks, like the new state-owned transport terminal at Igbogene, are features of modern cities. He warned against touting around the terminal, stressing that all travellers must go into the terminal for booking and boarding of vehicles. The governor also noted that the relocation would curb crime, as passengers entering the state would now be monitored. Diri expressed his satisfaction with the new terminal, saying it is a testament to what modern societies strive for. He noted that critics of his administration are unaware of what a modern society looks like, and that Bayelsans are pleased with the progress made so far. Diri’s ultimate goal is to bring Yenagoa to a better place and make it a modern city. In the statement by the Spokesperson, the governor also commended the security agencies for their collaborative efforts during the Yuletide period, which ensured a peaceful and crime-free festive season. He praised dancehall music star Timaya for his annual Timaya Day concert, which showcased great tourism potential for the state. Diri attended the concert and observed that the event attracted a huge crowd of mostly youths, with no incidents of crime reported. BAYELSA STATE GETS BOOST IN RICE PRODUCTION AS SOUTH KOREA INSTALLS MODERN RICE PROCESSING MILLSBayelsa State has made a significant milestone in its quest to be a major rice producer in Nigeria and the West African subregion. This is with the installation of modern rice processing mills in bayelsa as part of bilateral relationships between the state and a technical team from the Republic of South Korea.

In a statement made available to Capital Times News, the Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa State Governor, Dan Alabra, said the installation of the state-of-the-art mills, with a capacity to process 40 metric tonnes of rice paddies per day, was completed at the state-owned School-to-Land Farm in Yenagoa, the state capital. The leader of the Korean delegation, Mr. Byung Chul Son revealed that the team has worked closely with the state Ministry of Agriculture to train staff in various aspects of rice cultivation and production. According to Daniel Alabrah, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof. Beke Sese explained that the South Korean government donated four units of rice mills with a production capacity of 10 tonnes per day each. Prof. Sese stated, “What we had was a three-tonne per day rice mill. With the four units of 10 tonnes per day, we now have a combined 40 tonnes per day rice production mills. That means there will be an exponential increase in our rice production towards meeting our target of one million tonnes of rice production annually.” Governor Douye Diri expressed his gratitude to the Korean government for donation and technical support. The governor emphasized the state’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relationship with the Korean government in the area of agriculture. He noted, “Bayelsa has huge potential for rice cultivation, and yet we purchase rice. As a government, we decided to engage with the immediate past Korean ambassador to Nigeria, and he put Bayelsa under the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) programme that supports sustainable development in developing countries.” Daniel Alabrah quoted Governor Diri as saying, “So we are now benefiting from this partnership in terms of provision of farming equipment such as rice mills and technical assistance.” The governor urged the Korean engineers to explore the possibility of providing more technical support in training the state’s engineers to manufacture tractors and other farming equipment.

According to a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to Bayelsa Governor, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri condemned the use of innocent lives as shields, stating that “the report I received recently is that at illegal bunkering sites, they now have children and women, which is a dimension I have never heard before.” He emphasized that this trend is not only alarming but also poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of these vulnerable individuals. Governor Diri revealed that security operatives had discovered this trend during reconnaissance operations, and in some cases, the military had to withdraw from destroying the camps due to the presence of children and women. He urged the monarchs and council chairmen to take immediate action to curb this menace, which is prevalent in Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor, Brass, and Nembe council areas.
