NORTHERN ELDERS FORUM RAISES ALARM OVER LOPSIDED APPOINTMENTS UNDER PRESIDENT TINUBU
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concern over the persistent pattern of unfair and unequal federal appointments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since assuming office in October 2023. The appointments have overwhelmingly favored the South West region, undermining the spirit of national unity and violating the provisions of the Constitution. Spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, in a statement, condemned the recent composition of the National Census Committee, which is grossly lopsided in favor of the South West. “This exclusionary approach is a clear affront to democratic values such as fairness, inclusiveness, justice, and balanced representation,” Jiddere said. Jiddere noted that the conduct of a national census is a critical and sensitive matter that must enjoy the confidence and participation of all geopolitical zones. “Any attempt to marginalize or suppress the interests of other regions risks undermining the legitimacy, accuracy, and national acceptance of the census outcome,” Jiddere added. The NEF has demanded the immediate reconstitution of the National Census Committee to ensure equal representation of all six geopolitical zones in line with the federal character principle. Jiddere also called for a holistic review and equitable redistribution of all federal appointments in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to reflect true national diversity and constitutional compliance. Jiddere warned that continued disregard for the principles of equity, justice, and inclusivity threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s unity, breeding resentment, deepening divisions, and fueling avoidable instability in the country.
