NIGERIA’S KAFILAT ALMARUF BANNED FOR THREE YEARS OVER DOPING VIOLATIONS

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has imposed a three-year ban on Nigerian Para powerlifter Kafilat Almaruf after she tested positive for doping. The disciplinary action follows Almaruf’s anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) in breach of the IPC Anti-Doping Code. According to the IPC, Almaruf returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for the administration of an anabolic agent in a urine sample provided out-of-competition on July 11, 2024. Further analysis using Gas Chromatography/Combustion/Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) confirmed the presence of an anabolic agent of exogenous origin in Almaruf’s urine sample. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2024 Prohibited List classifies exogenous anabolic steroids as prohibited at all times. Almaruf was provisionally suspended by the IPC on August 19, 2024, pending a resolution of her case. She accepted the commission of the ADRV and the consequences proposed by the IPC. As a result of her violation, Almaruf will be ineligible for competition and other sporting activities for three years, from August 19, 2024, to August 18, 2027. All her results obtained from July 11, 2024, to August 19, 2024, are also disqualified, including forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes. The ban means Almaruf will miss the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games, where she would have represented Nigeria. The IPC’s decision emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a doping-free sporting environment and upholding the principles of fair play.
