GENERALS WITHOUT SHAME

The Saturday Essays by:Moses Oludele Idowu “It is not titles that honour men but men that honour titles.”  – Niccolo Machiavelli Sometimes in the 1980’s or 1990’s a troubling fact came to light from a retired army officer based on statistics to the effect that Nigeria has the highest number of retired generals in the world. Much more than Israel, Soviet Union, United States etc., and other nations involved in heavy military combat. I think it was the late Joe Garba who said it but can’t remember precisely now. That was about 30 years ago. With the gale of retirements every time government changes baton in the last few years the situation will now be worse. So we have more generals, retired generals than any nation on Earth.  But more does not mean better. And it is now time to question the processes by which a person rises to become a general in Nigerian Army and compare that process and interrogate it with other nations. Evidently something is not right. If we have produced this humongous number of generals both serving and retired and we are now more insecure both as individuals and a nation something definitely is not adding up. If a community has produced more academic professors and still have the largest number of illiterates in the entire region then it is proper to ask how and who made these people professors and how they acquired their titles and climbed to the professoriate. If the effects of their knowledge has no bearing and cannot be seen in the immediate environment then their authenticity is in doubt. I decided to write this article few days ago because I was deeply troubled. Not just for the insecurity and killings and terrorism but by a letter.A general was kidnapped in his own house by gunmen and kidnappers and taken to the forest in Katsina State. He was the former director of NYSC. He could not be rescued by the authorities and security agencies – the same agencies that could monitor protesters and their phone conversations. The friends of this general now came together formed a WhatsApp Group and began to raise money to free their colleague and friend. The terrorists demanded for N400 million ( four hundred million naira) but the family began to negotiate while his friends both serving and retired were raising money. They paid the ransom and he was released. Another general who coordinated the whole raising of ransom now posted a letter of appreciation on Social Media. This is what shocks me. First let me begin. I congratulate the family of General M I. Tshiga for his successful release from terrorists’ den safe and sound after 56 days in captivity. Only soldiers or someone trained in military could survive 56 days in the forest without harm. I salute his resilience. But still I am troubled and deeply too about the Army, Security Agencies and even NIgeria. Has it come to this?I am particularly troubled by the letter of appreciation of another general, Abdullahi about how they raise money for ransom to terrorists.Haba! In Nigeria? Generals raising money for ransom? Generals don’t pay ransom, they fight. Generals don’t raise money, they lead soldiers and warriors to the battlefield to save their fatherland. If army generals are now paying ransom to terrorists then what is the fate of the rest of us, “bloody civilians”? This battle is lost already. Even before it begins. Fellow countrymen, forget it, as long as these type of men are in charge of our affairs both in the political arena and in the Army we have lost the battle. I know a bit of military history. I have studied a bit of War History and I know that even generals rarely even come into the picture. Some of the spectacular actions and cases in military history were not even planned by generals but by younger and middle level officers like colonels and majors. Here are few cases: * The Israeli war hero of the Six -Day War, Guy Jacobson was not even a general for all his marvels. * Yoni Netanyahu, elder brother of current Israeli Prime Minister who led the Entebbe operation – one of the rarest in military history – was not a general. He was only a Colonel. * Charles Peace who trained and started the Delta Force, American Special Forces that did marvels during the Gulf War was just a Colonel. Israel faced the kind of terror NIgeria is now facing in the 1960’s. The Security Council had no answer because these were terrorists not conventional army. That was where Ariel Sharon first showed his military genius. He was only a major in the Army. With his Unit 201 of commandoes they made terrorists think twice before striking on Israeli targets. Just a major. He became so popular that whenever a Security Council was meeting the Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion would ask, ” Where is Major Sharon?” even brushing aside military protocols, to the envy of generals present. And by the time he became general he dealt with Hamas terrorists (sorry, freedom fighters) even pursuing them to Lebanon and Tunisia. The mysterious killing of Abu Jihad ( Abu Nidal) in Tunisia on Sunday morning in 1983 by Israeli commandoes was another masterpiece in military history and literature. Abu Nidal was the leader of Black September Organisation, a dissident Palestinian faction who masterminded  the 1973 Munich Olympic massacre of Israeli athletes. Soldiers are going deep into another nation to bring terrorists to justice. It is generals who are paying ransom to them in Nigeria. How about that? Egypt was rocked by Islamist terrorists in the 1970’s who even assassinated Anwar Sadat, a general and a hero of the Yom Kippur War. Thus when Gen. Hosni Mubarak took power he took on the terrorists head on. He dealt so bitterly and fatally with them they scattered in all directions and left Egypt. To even be found with any of their subversive literature

SECURING EDO STATE: GOVERNOR MONDAY OKPEBHOLO’S UNWAVERING FIGHT AGAINST CRIME

By Fred Itua Crime is a fundamental threat to societal stability, and in Edo State, it has manifested in various troubling forms—ranging from kidnapping and cult-related violence to armed robbery and illegal land grabbing. For years, criminal elements have terrorized communities, disrupted businesses, and put lives at risk. The inefficiency of past administrations allowed insecurity to fester, exemplified by incidents such as the kidnapping of Anthony Aziegbemi, chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the PDP was in power. This highlighted the failure of past security measures and underscored that insecurity did not start today. Since assuming office, Governor Monday Okpebholo has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to tackling crime head-on. Through a well-coordinated security strategy, his administration has empowered law enforcement agencies, revitalized community-based security networks, and upgraded infrastructure to enhance public safety. His approach is strategic, pragmatic, and people-focused, combining intelligence-driven policing, community engagement, and infrastructural investment to make Edo safer for residents, investors, and visitors alike. One of the key pillars of Governor Okpebholo’s security strategy is strengthening Edo State’s security architecture. His administration has prioritized equipping law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools to combat crime effectively. This includes providing operational vehicles, advanced communication gadgets, and logistical support to enhance rapid response capabilities. Additionally, the government has revitalized and funded security task forces, particularly those focused on kidnapping, cultism, and armed robbery. Under his leadership, there has been a sustained crackdown on criminal syndicates operating in the state. Reports indicate that several notorious kidnappers have been arrested, and many victims have been rescued due to swift, coordinated security operations. The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has been strengthened, with local vigilante groups complementing the police in intelligence gathering and crime prevention. This multi-layered approach has yielded tangible results, with multiple high-profile arrests recorded in recent months. Governor Okpebholo’s administration has intensified operations in known crime hotspots. The Special Anti-Kidnapping Task Force has launched aggressive operations along notorious routes such as the Benin-Auchi Road, the Benin-Lagos Expressway, and the Ekpoma-Irrua axis—areas previously plagued by rampant kidnappings. These efforts have dismantled criminal hideouts, leading to the successful rescue of abducted victims and the arrest of key figures behind major kidnapping syndicates. The Edo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army, has equally stepped up efforts to neutralize criminal networks. Notable successes include the dismantling of a major kidnapping ring operating in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwonde local government areas, which led to multiple arrests and the recovery of sophisticated weapons. Similarly, recent raids on cult hideouts in Benin City, Ekpoma, and Auchi resulted in over 50 suspected cultists being apprehended, significantly reducing inter-cult clashes and violent reprisals. Recognizing the persistent challenge of cult-related violence in Edo State, Governor Okpebholo has implemented a zero-tolerance policy on cultism. In the past, cult clashes led to loss of lives and destruction of property, but security operatives now have clear directives to arrest and prosecute those involved in cult-related violence. Beyond enforcement, the administration has engaged youth organizations, religious leaders, and community elders in peace-building efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate misguided youths into society. The government has also taken decisive action against illegal land-grabbing, particularly in Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, and Egor local government areas. Criminal cartels that previously extorted landowners are being dismantled, restoring confidence in Edo’s property sector and protecting rightful landowners from exploitation. Governor Okpebholo understands that security cannot be sustained through policing alone. His administration has actively involved traditional rulers, local vigilante groups, and town unions in crime prevention. The Edo State Security Corps has played a crucial role in intelligence gathering and rapid response, particularly in rural areas. Their collaboration with law enforcement agencies has led to increased arrests and a drastic reduction in rural crime rates. Beyond law enforcement, the government recognizes that economic empowerment is a vital tool in crime prevention. Unemployment remains a major driver of criminal activity, and the administration is addressing this by attracting investments and implementing youth empowerment programs. By focusing on industrialization, agribusiness, and entrepreneurship, the government is reducing the number of idle youths vulnerable to criminal recruitment. Additionally, vocational training and education initiatives are equipping young people with skills that provide them with legitimate sources of income. While the government has shown commendable leadership in tackling insecurity, lasting success requires collective responsibility. Security is not just the duty of the police or the government—it is a shared commitment that involves every citizen, traditional ruler, religious leader, and community member. For Edo to achieve sustainable security, community members must actively report suspicious activities and resist shielding criminals under the guise of “protecting our own.” Traditional rulers and local chiefs must work closely with security agencies to maintain peace within their domains. The judiciary must ensure that criminal cases are handled swiftly and fairly to deter potential offenders. Religious organizations and civil society groups should intensify awareness campaigns promoting non-violence, youth empowerment, and the dangers of criminal activities. The private sector can also support security initiatives by investing in community policing, surveillance systems, and social interventions. Governor Monday Okpebholo’s determined fight against crime is yielding measurable results. His administration’s strategic initiatives—ranging from strengthening security task forces and cracking down on kidnappers and cultists to investing in job creation and infrastructure—are laying the foundation for a safer and more prosperous Edo State. However, the fight against crime is not for the government alone. Every Edo resident has a role to play in sustaining the progress made. By working together, Edo State can become a model of security and development—a place where businesses flourish, communities thrive, and families live without fear. The government has set the pace, but it is now up to all stakeholders to consolidate these efforts. The time to act is now. Fred Itua is the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor.

EDO STATE GOVERNMENT DISMISSES PDP’S CLAIMS ON SECURITY AS “SHAMELESS PROPAGANDA”

The Edo State Government has dismissed claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the state is insecure, describing it as “shameless propaganda.” In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, stated that the PDP’s allegations are a desperate attempt to mislead the public and scare investors away. Itua emphasized that the state government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has made significant strides in improving security, contrary to the PDP’s claims. “Edo people have not forgotten that it was under PDP’s watch that security in the state completely collapsed, forcing citizens to live in fear,” Fred Itua said. The government highlighted several achievements in the security sector, including the deployment of special tactical teams, the rescue of kidnapped victims, and the passage of tougher laws against crime. “Unlike the PDP’s years of excuses and failures, Governor Monday Okpebholo has hit the ground running, implementing concrete and strategic measures to secure the state,” Itua added. Itua also noted that the state government has procured brand new security vehicles and motorcycles, which have enhanced the security agencies’ patrol and rapid response capabilities. “Edo is open for business, security is improving, and the government is fully committed to creating a safe and prosperous environment for all,” Fred Itua said. The government urged the PDP to desist from spreading falsehoods and to acknowledge the progress being made in the state. “Chris Nehikhare and the Edo PDP should bury their heads in shame for trying to mislead the public and scare investors away,” Itua stated. “Edo people know the truth, and the truth is that Governor Okpebholo is delivering real results in security, not PDP’s empty noise.”

GOVERNOR OTU BOOSTS SECURITY IN CROSS RIVER WITH 30 VEHICLES

Governor Bassey Edet Otu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security in Cross River State by renaming the state’s joint security outfit from Operation Akpakwu to Operation Okwok and equipping it with 30 operational vehicles. This marks the first phase of a larger plan to deploy a total of 100 vehicles to enhance security operations across the state. The joint task force comprises personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, Air Force, Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Immigration Service, and Correctional Service. Governor Otu emphasized his administration’s zero-tolerance to crime, noting that his leadership’s morale-boosting support for security agencies began with infrastructure upgrades, including improved internal roads network and remodeled buildings within security formations. “Cross River State is safer than ever,” the governor declared. “Cases of kidnapping have declined significantly, and robbery is nearly nonexistent. These achievements are due to the dedication of our security forces.” He reiterated that no one, regardless of status, would be exempt if found culpable to crime. “We are committed to ensuring peace, and anyone who threatens that peace will face the full weight of the law,” he warned. Governor Otu also outlined future security plans to include strengthening marine patrols, acquiring gunboats and drones for advanced surveillance, and recruiting personnel for a homeland security structure to enhance security. He assured investors that Cross River remains a secure destination for business, with the government dedicated to protecting investments and ensuring security. The State Security Adviser, Major General Okoi Ubi Obono (Rtd), described the initiative as a milestone in the state’s fight against crime. He explained the significance of the new name, Operation Okwok, an Efik word for “bee.” “Don’t let the sweetness of the bees fool you. Bees are highly territorial and fiercely protect their hive. Just like that, Operation Okwok is here to secure Cross River—producing honey when needed but stinging when provoked,” he said. The Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, commended Governor Otu’s unwavering support for security agencies, calling the donation a “festival of vehicles.” With this initiative, Governor Otu continues to prioritize security, positioning Cross River as a model for proactive governance in crime prevention and law enforcement.

NATIONAL SECURITY: POLICE ENFORCE CLAMPDOWN ON GUNRUNNING, FIREARM PROLIFERATION

The Nigeria Police Force has made significant strides in tackling gunrunning and reducing the proliferation of prohibited firearms and ammunition across the country. In a statement, the Force announced the recovery of 191 prohibited firearms, 4255 various live ammunition, and the arrest of 63 suspects involved in gunrunning and firearm proliferation. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP OLUMUYIWA ADEJOBI, noted that one of the significant achievements was the arrest of 8 suspects belonging to a gunrunning syndicate operating within Plateau State and its environs. The suspects were arrested after credible intelligence led operatives of the FID-IRT to the first suspect, which consequently led to the discovery of a large cache of arms concealed inside a vehicle doormat belonging to the syndicate. Adejoji stated that the exhibits recovered during this operation included 12 rounds of 7.88mm live ammunitions, 8 fabricated AK47 rifles, 4 fabricated revolver guns, 4 fabricated semi-automatic pistols, 11 AK47 magazines, and 1105 live AK47 ammunition. Additionally, operatives of the FID-IRT arrested one Amos Sunday Gyang ‘m’ at Plateau State in possession of a semi-automatic pistol he claimed to have found hidden inside a cushion of an apartment he had rented. Adejoji emphasized that it is a crime to be found in possession of a weapon without proper licensing. “In the case of discovering any weapon, citizens should ensure to notify the police and avoid any sort of implication,” he said. Adejoji also reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property, sparing no efforts in effectively combatting all security threats. The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has demonstrated its dedication to enhancing national security and combating organized crime. As Adejoji noted, the Force will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

SOLUDO’S SECURITY INITIATIVE GETS BOOST AS PEACE AND MEDIA ADVOCACY OFFERS SUPPORT

A pan-Nigeria security organization, Peace and Media Advocacy, has thrown its weight behind the security initiative of Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo. The group commended Soludo for signing the Homeland Security Law, which has reportedly energized security operations in the state. In a press statement, Comrade James Okonkwo, initiator of the group, acknowledged the patriotic disposition of members of the Anambra State House of Assembly for fast-tracking the passage of the Homeland Security Bill. Okonkwo described this as “a demonstration of governmental synergy tangential to peace and security in Anambra State.” Peace and Media Advocacy called on Ndi Anambra to be vigilant and supportive of the Soludo Administration’s resolve to make life more secure and meaningful for the people. The group also deplored the opposition’s attempts to politicize the security situation in the state, urging them to desist from such actions. Furthermore, the group appealed to the clergy to rally round the government to improve the security situation in Anambra State. “All leaders of thought, it is incumbent on religious leaders to preach peace and love in Anambra State,” the statement read. Finally, Peace and Media Advocacy called on town unions to resuscitate vigilantes in their various communities, stating that this would go a long way in boosting peace and security in Anambra State. This development comes as Governor Soludo launches “Operation Udo Ga-Achi,” a special security initiative aimed at tackling crime and insecurity in the state.
