FIRE GUTS SHANTIES IN LAGOS, NO CASUALTIES REPORTED

A fire incident occurred in the Surulere area of Lagos, gutting several shanties erected beside a canal. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. According to the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received distress calls through the 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at 01:18 hours. The response team was promptly mobilized from Onipanu and arrived at the scene at 01:31 hours. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started in one of the rooms in a row of makeshift shanty structures gutted by the fire and quickly spread to other rooms in the row. “It was brought under control by the combined efforts of emergency responders at the incident scene. No casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. The fire has been totally extinguished, and dampening down, search, and rescue operations have been concluded. Oke-Osanyintolu commended the combined efforts of emergency responders, which helped prevent further escalation of the fire.
