MINISTER OF WOMEN AFFAIRS ADVOCATES FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AT UN CONFERENCE
The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has continued her advocacy for women empowerment at the ongoing Commission for the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York. In a statement, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged global leaders to correct the oversight and position women and girls to design and lead sustainable cities of the future. During a high-level dialogue on women and girls’ leadership at the Millennium Hilton Hotel, Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the importance of women’s roles in shaping sustainable cities, resilient communities, and climate-conscious governance. She stated, “Too often, women are seen only as beneficiaries of urban planning and environmental policies rather than as decision-makers, innovators, and architects of change.” Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that the world is experiencing unprecedented urbanization, environmental degradation, and climate change impacts, which disproportionately affect women and girls. She highlighted the need for women to be at the forefront of designing and leading sustainable cities, saying, “When women lead, cities become more livable, economic growth becomes more inclusive, and environmental policies become more effective.” The Minister also announced Nigeria’s commitment to advancing gender-sensitive urban policies, driving inclusive climate action, and setting measurable targets for reporting at international forums. She revealed that seven Nigerian states have joined the Global Cities for CEDAW Coalition, with a formal commitment to integrate CEDAW principles into local governance. Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the need for deliberate action to ensure gender-balanced representation in urban governance, investing in women-led climate solutions, and creating financing mechanisms that empower women entrepreneurs driving sustainability. She concluded, “As we sign this Global Campaign Agreement, let us be clear – this is a generational responsibility. It is a promise to the women and girls of today and the future that they will inherit cities that are just, inclusive, safe, and sustainable.”
