Trump Awards Medal of Honor to Three Veterans for Extraordinary Valor in Vietnam and Afghanistan

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday presented the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for valor, to three veterans recognized for extraordinary acts of heroism during the Vietnam War and the war in Afghanistan.

The awards were presented during a ceremony at the White House attended by military leaders, veterans, family members and government officials.

Among the recipients was retired Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr., who was honored for his actions during a reconnaissance mission in Vietnam in 1967. Despite sustaining severe injuries during an ambush, Capers continued to lead his unit, coordinated air support and helped ensure the evacuation of wounded Marines. Military officials said his leadership under fire saved numerous lives.

The second recipient was retired Army Major Nicholas Dockery, who was recognized for his bravery during a fierce battle in Afghanistan in 2012. According to military accounts, Dockery repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while rescuing wounded soldiers, directing air support and helping repel a large-scale insurgent attack before becoming the last American soldier to leave the battlefield.

The third award was presented posthumously to Marine Corps Colonel John W. Ripley, a highly respected Vietnam War veteran. Ripley was honored for his actions in 1972 when he destroyed a strategic bridge under intense enemy fire, helping to halt the advance of a much larger North Vietnamese force. Members of his family accepted the medal on his behalf.

During the ceremony, Trump praised the recipients as examples of courage, sacrifice and patriotism, describing them as men whose actions reflected the highest traditions of military service.

“Their courage saved lives and inspired generations,” the president said, adding that the nation would never forget their service and dedication.

The Medal of Honor is awarded in the name of the U.S. Congress to service members who distinguish themselves through acts of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their own lives above and beyond the call of duty.

The ceremony highlighted stories spanning two major conflicts and underscored the sacrifices made by American service members in combat. For the families and fellow veterans in attendance, the event served as both a celebration of heroism and a reminder of the costs of war.

The recognition of Capers, Dockery and Ripley adds their names to the distinguished list of Medal of Honor recipients whose actions have become part of American military history.
