At least five people have been killed and more than 10 others injured after a gunman opened fire on people at the Main Market Square in Kraków, southern Poland, on Saturday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at approximately 3 p.m. local time on November 7, when the suspected attacker reportedly drove into the busy square and fired at random people from a vehicle, according to Polish police.

The Main Market Square, also known as Rynek Główny, is one of Kraków’s most popular tourist destinations and attracts large numbers of residents and visitors.

Police confirmed that officers shot and wounded the suspected gunman during a confrontation. He was subsequently taken to hospital, while emergency responders and security personnel continued operations at the scene.

Some of those injured in the attack were police officers, according to reports.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was receiving regular updates from the country’s Interior Minister as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement posted on social media, Tusk said the police were examining the background and all circumstances of the shooting.

President Karol Nawrocki also expressed concern over the incident, extending his thoughts to the victims, injured persons and their families.

The shooting prompted a major emergency response, with police officers, ambulances and other emergency personnel deployed to the city centre.

Authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive account of the suspected attacker’s identity, possible motive or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
