United States First Lady Melania Trump and Louisiana State University (LSU) have secured $5 million to establish a permanent scholarship fund for students who have experienced foster care.

The initiative, operating under Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future programme, is designed to expand access to higher education and provide financial support to young people who have faced challenges growing up within the foster care system.

The announcement was scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with the programme also set to feature prominently across the university campus and at Tiger Stadium ahead of the LSU Tigers’ football match against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

According to the White House, the $5 million will be used to establish an endowment fund that will provide permanent financial support for eligible LSU students with foster care backgrounds.

However, the White House did not disclose the source of the funding or provide detailed information about the scholarship application process and individual award amounts.

Melania Trump began advocating for young people in foster care after her husband’s first presidential term ended in 2021. Her Fostering the Future initiative has since focused on providing educational opportunities, scholarships and resources to help young people achieve financial independence.

LSU is among more than 20 colleges and universities across the United States participating in the programme.

Earlier this year, the First Lady appeared before members of Congress to advocate for legislation aimed at expanding support for young people in foster care, particularly those transitioning into adulthood.

She highlighted the difficulties many face in securing housing, transportation and other essential services, noting that these challenges can affect their academic performance and long-term financial stability.

In November 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a broader Fostering the Future programme designed to bring together federal agencies, universities, private companies and charitable organisations to expand education and employment opportunities for young people from foster care backgrounds.

The initiative also includes an online resource platform intended to connect young people with educational and career opportunities.

Beyond the United States, Melania Trump has introduced Fostering the Future Together, an international initiative involving more than 45 countries.

The LSU partnership represents another expansion of the programme, with the permanent endowment intended to provide sustained educational assistance to students who might otherwise struggle to finance university education.
