Two United States service members have been reported missing in southwestern Morocco following a multinational military exercise, prompting an ongoing search-and-rescue operation involving multiple countries.

According to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the soldiers went missing on Saturday near the Cap Draa Training Area, close to the coastal city of Tan-Tan, where the annual African Lion 2026 exercise is being held.

Military officials said the two personnel, identified as U.S. Army soldiers, were not actively engaged in training at the time of their disappearance. Instead, they were reportedly on a recreational hike after the day’s drills had concluded.

Initial reports suggest the pair may have fallen from cliffs into the Atlantic Ocean, though authorities have stressed that investigations are still ongoing and no foul play or terrorism is suspected.

A large-scale search effort has since been launched, involving U.S., Moroccan, and allied forces participating in the exercise. The operation includes helicopters, naval vessels, drones, and ground rescue teams, as officials race against time to locate the missing soldiers.

African Lion is the largest annual joint military exercise led by the United States in Africa, bringing together thousands of troops from dozens of countries to strengthen military cooperation and readiness across the region.

Authorities say the search remains active, with AFRICOM emphasizing that its priority is the safe recovery of the missing personnel and support for their families.
