Two US Troops Killed, One Missing After Iranian Attack on Base in Jordan
Two American service members have been killed and another remains missing after an Iranian missile and drone attack targeted a U.S. military base in Jordan, marking one of the deadliest incidents involving American forces since the latest phase of the conflict between Washington and Tehran began.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that the attack occurred on Friday as American personnel were defending Muwaffaq Salti Air Base against a coordinated barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. Four additional service members were injured during the assault and were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan before later being discharged after treatment.
CENTCOM said the identities of the two fallen troops and the missing service member are being withheld until the families have been notified. Military officials also confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the fate of the missing soldier.
The strike represents the first confirmed U.S. military fatalities caused directly by Iranian fire in the current phase of hostilities. It also marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has seen both countries exchange repeated missile, drone and air strikes across the Middle East in recent weeks.
Jordan has become an increasingly important hub for U.S. military operations in the region, hosting American troops, aircraft and logistics facilities that support missions across the Middle East. Iranian forces have repeatedly identified U.S. installations in Jordan as legitimate military targets, arguing that they are being used to launch operations against Iran.
The latest attack comes after several nights of sustained U.S. airstrikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including missile sites, air defence systems and naval facilities. Washington says those operations are intended to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and protect international shipping routes, particularly around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Iran has responded by expanding missile and drone attacks against U.S. bases and allied facilities across the Gulf region.
Military analysts warn that the deaths of the two American troops could increase pressure on the Trump administration to intensify its military response. Additional U.S. fighter aircraft and support assets have reportedly been deployed to the region as officials prepare for the possibility of further Iranian attacks.
The growing conflict has also fueled concerns among U.S. allies in the Middle East, many of whom fear that continued exchanges between Washington and Tehran could draw more countries into the confrontation. The fighting has already disrupted commercial shipping, threatened regional energy infrastructure and heightened volatility in global oil markets.
As rescue teams and military personnel continue searching for the missing service member, U.S. officials have vowed to support the families of those affected and to hold those responsible accountable. With no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough, observers warn that the latest attack could further deepen one of the most dangerous confrontations in the Middle East in recent years.
