U.S. Strikes Iranian Military Targets as Tehran Retaliates with Air Base Attack

The United States has confirmed carrying out airstrikes on Iranian military installations, prompting a swift response from Tehran in the latest escalation of tensions between the two countries.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes targeted Iranian air defence systems, a ground control station and attack drones along Iran’s Gulf coast. Washington said the operation was conducted after Iran allegedly shot down a U.S. MQ-1 drone that was flying in international airspace.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded on Monday, announcing that it had targeted a U.S.-linked air base used in the operation against southern Iran. Iranian officials did not immediately identify the location of the base but described the attack as a direct response to American military action.

The exchange comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain a ceasefire and negotiate a broader agreement between Washington and Tehran. However, repeated military incidents have continued to threaten the fragile truce that took effect earlier this year.

Reports from Kuwait indicated that air defence systems were activated as missile and drone threats were intercepted, with warning sirens sounding across parts of the country. Kuwait hosts major U.S. military facilities and has become increasingly exposed to regional tensions.

The broader conflict, which intensified after the outbreak of war involving the U.S., Israel and Iran earlier this year, has already caused significant casualties and disrupted global energy markets. Concerns remain high over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Washington’s objective is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, while Iranian leaders continue to deny pursuing such a program. Negotiations over sanctions relief, frozen Iranian assets and regional security remain unresolved.

Analysts warn that continued military exchanges could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and further destabilize an already volatile Middle East region.
