US Military Turns Back 23 Vessels in Escalating Iran Blockade

The United States military has confirmed that its naval forces have turned back at least 23 vessels attempting to approach Iranian ports, as enforcement of a sweeping maritime blockade intensifies in the Gulf region.

According to officials from the U.S. Central Command, the intercepted vessels were ordered to reverse course as part of ongoing efforts to restrict maritime access to Iran. The blockade, which targets ships entering or leaving Iranian coastal areas, is aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran amid escalating tensions.

Military sources say the operation is being carried out by a combination of U.S. warships, surveillance aircraft, and thousands of personnel deployed across key waterways, including areas near the Strait of Hormuz. The enforcement has so far been largely non-violent, with vessels complying and turning back without confrontation.

The development comes as part of a broader geopolitical standoff between Washington and Tehran, following the imposition of the blockade earlier in April after failed diplomatic talks. U.S. authorities have maintained that no ship has successfully breached the blockade since it began, reinforcing claims of strict control over maritime movement in the region.

However, the situation remains highly volatile. Iran has condemned the blockade as an act of “piracy” and responded by tightening its own control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. Reports of gunfire targeting commercial vessels and conflicting announcements about the strait’s status have added to uncertainty for international shipping.

Analysts warn that continued escalation could disrupt global oil supply chains, as roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Hormuz corridor. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but with both sides maintaining hardline positions, fears of further confrontation remain high.
