Mali Defence Chief Dies in Coordinated Assault on Military Bases
Mali has been thrown into fresh political and security uncertainty following the reported death of Defence Minister General Sadio Camara during a wave of coordinated attacks on military bases across the country.
The attacks, believed to have been carried out by armed insurgent groups, targeted several military installations simultaneously, raising fears of a major escalation in the country’s prolonged security crisis.
General Camara, one of the most influential figures in Mali’s transitional government and a key ally of the ruling military leadership, was reportedly caught in the assault and later confirmed dead.
His death has sent shockwaves across the country, with security analysts warning that it could deepen instability within the military-led administration.
Sources said the coordinated attacks struck strategic military locations, overwhelming security personnel and causing significant casualties among soldiers and senior officers.
Although official details remain limited, reports indicate that the assaults were highly organised and may have been aimed at weakening the authority of the ruling junta.
General Camara played a central role in Mali’s defence strategy and was regarded as one of the strongest voices within the country’s military establishment.
His influence extended beyond defence matters, making him a major political figure in the Sahel nation’s fragile transition process.
The government is yet to release a full official statement on the incident, but security has reportedly been tightened in Bamako and other key regions.
Mali has faced years of insurgency, political coups, and growing insecurity, with armed groups linked to extremist networks continuing to launch deadly attacks despite repeated military operations.
The latest development is expected to further increase tensions as the country struggles to maintain stability amid internal political pressure and regional security threats.
