Uncertainty is growing over the status of the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran after former U.S. President Donald Trump declined to confirm whether the truce remains in effect, even as tensions escalate in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking amid rising hostilities, Trump avoided giving a direct answer on the ceasefire’s status, fueling concerns that the agreement reached in early April, may be on the verge of collapse. The hesitation comes as both sides exchange threats and military activity intensifies around one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

Recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz have significantly strained the already fragile truce. Reports indicate that U.S. naval forces have engaged Iranian boats and drones while escorting commercial vessels through the waterway, as part of a mission aimed at restoring safe passage for global shipping.

Iran, however, has warned that any foreign military presence in the strait without its coordination would be treated as a violation, and has reportedly threatened retaliation.

The situation has been further complicated by attacks on commercial and energy infrastructure in the region, including drone and missile strikes linked to Iran, which have heightened fears of a broader conflict.

At the center of the crisis is the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Renewed instability has already triggered spikes in oil prices and raised concerns about global energy security.

Despite the ceasefire technically remaining in place, analysts warn that continued military operations, including the U.S.-led effort to escort ships dubbed “Project Freedom” could undermine diplomatic efforts and push both sides back into full-scale confrontation.
