Thousands of protesters on Saturday shut down Austria’s crucial Brenner motorway, one of Europe’s busiest transport corridors connecting Germany and Italy, in a demonstration against rising traffic congestion, noise pollution, and environmental damage in the Alpine region.

The protest took place near Matrei am Brenner in Austria’s Tyrol province, where residents have long complained about the growing number of trucks and tourist vehicles passing through the Wipp Valley and Brenner Pass. Authorities closed sections of the motorway and surrounding roads for several hours to accommodate the demonstration, which attracted around 3,000 protesters.

The action was led by Karl Muehlsteiger, mayor of Gries am Brenner, who said local communities could no longer cope with the constant flow of traffic and the resulting pollution. Protesters called on Austrian authorities, the European Union, and neighboring countries to take stronger measures to reduce heavy transit traffic through the region.

Despite fears that the closure would create severe travel disruptions during a busy holiday period, reports indicated that traffic chaos was largely avoided as many motorists heeded warnings and stayed away from the area. However, train services along the same corridor experienced overcrowding as travelers sought alternative routes.

The Brenner Pass is one of Europe’s most important north-south transport links, carrying millions of vehicles every year between northern and southern Europe. According to Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG, traffic volumes on the route have increased steadily over the past two decades, with freight transport remaining a major concern for residents living along the corridor.

The demonstration also highlighted longstanding tensions between Austria and Germany over transit traffic through the Alps. Tyrol authorities have repeatedly introduced restrictions aimed at reducing congestion and emissions, measures that have often drawn criticism from transport operators and neighboring regions.

Meanwhile, authorities in Italy were also investigating a suspected arson attack that disrupted rail services on the Verona-Brenner railway line overnight, though no direct connection to the motorway protest has been confirmed.
