Unruly Passenger Forces United Flight to Make Emergency Landing in Wisconsin
A United Airlines flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis was diverted to Wisconsin after an unruly passenger allegedly made multiple attempts to gain access to the aircraft’s cockpit, prompting a major security response and an FBI investigation.
The incident occurred aboard United Flight 2005 on Friday evening. The Boeing 737, carrying 147 passengers and six crew members, was forced to land at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison after crew members reported a serious security concern involving a disruptive passenger.
According to air traffic control communications cited by several media outlets, the passenger repeatedly attempted to breach the cockpit. A crew member reportedly told ground controllers that the individual had made “multiple attempts” to enter the flight deck before being subdued. The passenger was eventually restrained and monitored by law enforcement officers onboard until the aircraft landed.
Upon arrival in Madison, local law enforcement officers and FBI agents met the aircraft and detained the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the individual’s identity or disclosed potential charges. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
United Airlines confirmed that the diversion was caused by a security issue involving an unruly passenger. The airline stated that the flight landed safely and later continued to Minneapolis after the passenger was removed from the aircraft.
Federal authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Aviation experts note that attempted cockpit breaches are extremely rare in the United States due to stringent security measures introduced after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The flight eventually resumed its journey and arrived in Minneapolis several hours behind schedule.
