Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama after Caleb Yirenkyi scored deep into stoppage time to seal all three points in a tense Group L encounter on Wednesday.

The match appeared destined to end in a goalless draw until the fifth minute of added time, when Ghana launched a swift counterattack. Brandon Thomas-Asante surged forward and delivered a precise pass into the penalty area, allowing Yirenkyi to tap home and spark wild celebrations among the Black Stars supporters. The goal was Yirenkyi’s first competitive international strike for Ghana.

Panama had been the more dangerous side for much of the first half, controlling possession and creating several promising opportunities. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi was called into action on multiple occasions to keep the Central Americans at bay before suffering an injury late in the opening period. He was replaced by Benjamin Asare at halftime.

The second half saw Ghana gradually improve, with both sides pushing for a breakthrough. Panama came close through Cristian Martinez, whose effort struck the side netting, while Ghana threatened through Jonas Adjetey and Jordan Ayew as the contest opened up.

Just when a draw seemed inevitable, Ghana struck decisively. Thomas-Asante’s quick thinking and incisive run carved open the Panama defence, and Yirenkyi made no mistake from close range to hand the four-time African champions a priceless victory.

Speaking after the match, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz praised his players’ determination and fighting spirit.

“The wins in this World Cup are very expensive. Our players have shown they are ready to pay high prices for the win,” Queiroz said.

Panama coach Thomas Christiansen described the defeat as “cruel,” believing his side deserved more after a spirited performance. The loss leaves Panama still searching for their first-ever World Cup victory.

The result places Ghana alongside England at the top of Group L after the Three Lions defeated Croatia 4-2 earlier in the day. Ghana’s next challenge will be a heavyweight clash against England in Boston on June 23, while Panama face Croatia in a must-win encounter.
