Ukraine Gains Ground Diplomatically as Trump Joins G7 Consensus
U.S. President Donald Trump drew attention at the Group of Seven summit after jokingly telling fellow world leaders, “I’m the boss,” while also signaling a notable shift toward supporting Ukraine’s position in its war against Russia.
The remark, which prompted laughter among leaders attending the summit in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains, came as G7 nations issued a unified statement backing Ukraine and pledging additional pressure on Russia through expanded sanctions.
The summit marked a significant moment in the evolution of Trump’s approach to the conflict. Leaders from the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan acknowledged Ukraine’s improved battlefield position and agreed to strengthen support for Kyiv while increasing economic pressure on Moscow.
The joint declaration reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and included commitments to tighten sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its oil and gas sectors. The measures are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s position in any future peace negotiations with the Kremlin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the summit seeking to convince allies that recent military gains have improved Kyiv’s leverage. His efforts appeared to find a more receptive audience in Trump, who held talks with the Ukrainian leader and reportedly expressed optimism about the prospects for peace.
Several European leaders suggested that Washington’s position on the conflict has become more aligned with that of its allies. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States had adopted what many leaders considered a more realistic view of the war, while French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly described the shift as a meaningful change in approach.
The summit was also dominated by discussions on the recently announced U.S.-Iran ceasefire framework, critical mineral supply chains, and artificial intelligence governance. Nevertheless, Ukraine remained one of the central issues, with leaders seeking to maintain unity against Russia despite differences on other geopolitical matters.
Russia reacted critically to the summit’s outcome. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov suggested that European leaders had influenced Trump’s views on Ukraine, though he acknowledged that the U.S. president ultimately makes his own decisions.
While questions remain about the long-term durability of Trump’s support for Ukraine, the summit concluded with a rare display of unity among G7 leaders. For Kyiv, the outcome represented an important diplomatic victory at a time when it is seeking stronger international backing and greater leverage in any future negotiations with Moscow.
