US Embassy Celebrates Nigerian Innovator Behind Multi-Million-Dollar Hair Braiding Robot
The United States Mission in Nigeria has publicly celebrated Yinka Ogunbiyi, a 27-year-old Nigerian-American biomechanical engineer and Harvard graduate, following her breakthrough invention of what is described as the world’s first patented braid-assist robot, an innovation that has already attracted US$7 million in seed funding and generated thousands of salon waitlist requests. The embassy hailed her achievement as an example of innovation with global impact.
In a post shared on its official social media platforms, the U.S. Mission praised Ogunbiyi’s company, HaloBraid, highlighting its potential to transform the beauty industry by reducing the physical strain and time associated with traditional hair braiding. The embassy wrote that her work represents “American innovation, global impact,” while celebrating her success as part of its #AmericanExcellence campaign.
Ogunbiyi developed the idea during the COVID-19 pandemic after spending four days installing her own knotless braids at home. The experience left her with severe back pain and hand cramps, prompting her to search for a technological solution that could assist professional hairstylists without replacing them. She later partnered with fellow innovator David Afolabi to establish HaloBraid.
The HaloBraid system is designed to function as a robotic assistant that works alongside hairstylists, helping reduce the time required for intricate braiding while easing the repetitive physical stress that many stylists experience. According to the company, the technology is intended to improve productivity in salons while preserving the creativity and expertise of professional braiders.
The startup has attracted strong investor interest, securing US$7 million in seed funding and reportedly building a waiting list of more than 7,000 salons interested in adopting the technology. Industry observers say the investment reflects growing confidence in the use of robotics and artificial intelligence within the global beauty and personal care sector.
Ogunbiyi’s achievement has been widely celebrated across social media, with many Nigerians describing her as an inspiration for young innovators and entrepreneurs. Supporters praised her ability to combine engineering with practical solutions to everyday challenges, while others said her success demonstrates the increasing influence of Nigerians in global science and technology.
Technology experts note that the invention could reshape the protective hairstyling industry by making braiding more efficient and reducing workplace injuries among stylists who often spend long hours standing and performing repetitive hand movements. If successfully commercialised, HaloBraid could also help salons serve more customers without compromising quality.
