Trump bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House

US President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are being barred from the White House, escalating his ongoing dispute with major news organisations over their coverage of his administration.

Trump announced the decision Friday in a post on Truth Social, saying the three outlets were being banned “effective immediately” because of what he described as repeated “FAKE NEWS” reporting. He also suggested that other media organisations could face similar restrictions.

Trump accused the outlets of reporting what he characterised as “fiction and lies” about him, his administration and the United States. He did not identify specific reports that prompted the decision.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico, as well as the National Press Club, had not immediately responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.

The announcement represents another escalation in Trump’s long-running confrontation with news organisations whose coverage he considers unfavourable. Reuters reported that Trump has previously criticised broadcasters and called for regulatory action against stations over programming he objected to.

The move comes as the White House continues to operate a rotating press-access system. A White House press rotation announced for September 14-20 included different television, print, radio and digital outlets on different days, with CNN listed in the television rotation earlier in the week.

Trump’s latest announcement has also raised questions about press access and the administration’s relationship with the media. Bloomberg Government described the move as one affecting the ability of news organisations to cover the executive branch from the White House, while other reports noted potential First Amendment implications.

The White House has not yet publicly detailed how the ban will be implemented, including whether it will apply to individual reporters, the organisations’ broader access to White House grounds, or participation in official press events.

Trump also indicated that the three outlets would not necessarily be the last to face restrictions, saying other media organisations could follow.
