Russia has released 24 Filipino nationals who had been detained on various legal and immigration-related grounds following discussions between Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Philippine officials.

The release came after high-level talks in Moscow, where Marcos raised concerns about the welfare of Filipino citizens in Russia and sought assistance in resolving their cases. Philippine authorities described the move as a significant diplomatic achievement and a reflection of improving relations between the two countries.

According to officials from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, the 24 Filipinos had been facing a range of issues, including immigration violations and administrative offenses. Following negotiations between Manila and Moscow, Russian authorities agreed to facilitate their release and eventual return to the Philippines.

President Marcos welcomed the development, thanking the Russian government for what he described as a humanitarian gesture. He said the welfare and protection of overseas Filipinos remain a key priority of his administration and expressed appreciation for Russia’s cooperation in addressing the matter.

The Kremlin also confirmed that the issue was discussed during bilateral meetings between the two leaders. While Russian officials did not provide extensive details regarding the individual cases, they emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with the Philippines on consular and humanitarian matters.

The release is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Manila and Moscow, which have expanded cooperation in recent years in areas including trade, agriculture, education, and energy. Analysts noted that the resolution of the detainees’ cases could help build goodwill between the two governments at a time of evolving geopolitical relationships in Asia and Europe.
