Russian Drone Crashes Into Romanian Apartment Building After Ukraine Strike
A Russian drone that was part of an overnight strike on Ukraine has crashed into a residential apartment building in eastern Romania, Romanian authorities have confirmed, in what marks a rare and serious spillover of the war into NATO territory.
According to Romanian defence officials and multiple international reports, the drone entered Romanian airspace during Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukrainian targets near the Danube border region before losing control and slamming into a 10-storey apartment block in the city of Galați.
The impact triggered an explosion and fire on the upper floors of the building, forcing the evacuation of residents. At least two people were reported injured, including a woman and a child, while emergency services rushed to secure the area and prevent further damage.
Romania’s Ministry of Defence said fighter jets, including F-16 aircraft, were scrambled after radar systems detected the drone crossing into Romanian territory. However, the drone was not intercepted before it crashed.
Authorities described the incident as a “serious violation of international law” and confirmed that NATO allies had been informed. Romanian officials also indicated that this was one of the most significant drone-related incidents to date involving civilian infrastructure inside the country since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The crash comes amid a growing number of drone incursions and debris falls along Romania’s border with Ukraine, particularly in areas close to key Ukrainian port cities targeted by Russian strikes.
Romania, which shares a long border with Ukraine and is a NATO member state, has repeatedly reported airspace violations since the war began, but direct impact on a residential building marks a notable escalation in risk to civilians within allied territory.
NATO is expected to review air defence readiness along its eastern flank as tensions continue to rise.
