PRESIDENCY DISCLAIMS 2027 CAMPAIGN BILLBOARDS NATIONWIDE

The Presidency has expressed dismay over the increasing number of billboards promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in some cities. The billboards, featuring pictures of the President and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, have been spotted in Abuja and Kano. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified in a statement that President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land. Bayo Onanuga emphasized that premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages. “The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections,” Bayo Onanuga said. Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, President Tinubu has not endorsed or authorized anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel. Bayo Onanuga urged individuals and groups funding the 2027 political campaign through billboards nationwide to cease immediately. “President Tinubu and his deputy are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building they have set for themselves,” Bayo Onanuga added. The President’s focus on economic revitalization, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security demonstrates his commitment to nation-building. Bayo Onanuga assured that when INEC signals the start of the 2027 election process, President Tinubu will inform Nigerians of his plans.

SUPREME COURT AFFIRMS LUCKY AIYEDATIWA’S QUALIFICATION FOR ONDO GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by Agboola Ajayi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the Ondo governorship election, challenging the qualification of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. A five-member panel of the Apex Court affirmed Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy, stating that Ajayi lacks the legal rights to challenge the choice of candidate of another political party. Aiyedatiwa, who scored 366,781 votes, winning in all 18 local government areas of the state, was declared the winner of the November 16, 2024, election. Ajayi, who polled 117,845 votes, had alleged forgery, impersonation, and false identity against Aiyedatiwa’s deputy, Olayide Adelami. However, the Supreme Court held that the initial case filed at the Federal High Court was done beyond the 14-day period within which to do so. The court awarded a cost of N2 million against Ajayi in favor of the four respondents in the appeal, amounting to N8 million in total. Both the Federal High Court and the Appeal Court Akure Division had previously dismissed the case against Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy. The Supreme Court’s decision has put an end to the controversy surrounding Aiyedatiwa’s qualification for the governorship election.
