VIDEO: NIGERIAN BOXER GABRIEL OLUWASEGUN OLANREWAJU DIES AFTER COLLAPSING DURING BOUT IN GHANA
Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, 40, tragically died after collapsing in the ring during a professional fight against Ghana’s John Mbagunu, popularly known as “Power,” on Saturday night. The bout, part of the undercard for Ghana’s Professional Boxing League, took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. A viral video from the match shows Olanrewaju exchanging fierce punches with Mbagunu before suddenly stumbling and collapsing to the canvas. Initially mistaken for a knockdown by the referee and timekeeper, the situation escalated as medical personnel rushed into the ring. Despite prolonged attempts to revive him, Olanrewaju was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Preliminary reports indicate he may have suffered a cardiac arrest. Olanrewaju, born in Lagos, Nigeria, had a professional career spanning 23 fights, with 13 wins—12 of which came by knockout. However, the veteran fighter had recently faced a downturn, losing his last four matches leading up to Saturday’s fatal contest. The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) confirmed the incident in a brief statement, expressing condolences to Olanrewaju’s family and promising a full investigation. “This is a heartbreaking loss for the boxing community. We are deeply saddened and will work to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragedy,” the GBA said. Fans and fellow athletes worldwide have shared tributes online, honoring Olanrewaju’s dedication to the sport. The boxing community awaits further details as authorities prepare an official report.
