DELTA EMERGES CHAMPION OF 22ND NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL
Team Delta has emerged as the champion of the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) after topping the medals table with 122 gold, 95 silver, and 105 bronze medals. The victory marks Delta’s ninth NSF triumph and the state’s fifth consecutive win. The 11-day-long sporting festival, which saw over 10,000 athletes participate in 30 sports, came to a close on Thursday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Team Bayelsa came second with 90 gold, 61 silver, and 70 bronze medals, while Team Ogun finished third with 89 gold, 44 silver, and 77 bronze medals. The festival was marked by exciting moments, including Davido’s dazzling performance in the opening ceremony and Ogun’s victory in the men’s football final, where they thrashed Kwara before a packed stadium. However, the event was not without controversy, as some athletes were disqualified due to doping issues, and a tanker explosion occurred at the games venue. Additionally, Ogun athletes staged a protest over unpaid allowances, causing some disruptions during the festival. Despite these challenges, the event was deemed a success, with many athletes showcasing their talents and sportsmanship. Delta’s victory is a testament to the state’s commitment to sports development and its ability to produce top-notch athletes. The state’s athletes performed exceptionally well across various sports, securing a total of 322 medals. The National Sports Festival is a premier sporting event in Nigeria, aimed at promoting sports development and unity among the country’s 36 states. The festival provides a platform for athletes to showcase their talents, and it serves as a selection process for national teams.
