BRITISH COMEDIAN RUSSELL BRAND CHARGED WITH RAPE AND SEXUAL OFFENSES BY UK POLICE
UK police have formally charged British comedian and actor Russell Brand with multiple sexual offenses, including rape, following an investigation into allegations by four women. The Metropolitan Police announced Friday that Brand, 50, faces charges of one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. He is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London in early June. The charges stem from alleged incidents spanning 1999 to 2005. Authorities detailed that one woman was raped in Bournemouth in 1999, another was indecently assaulted in London’s Westminster area in 2001, a third was orally raped and sexually assaulted in Westminster in 2004, and a fourth was sexually assaulted in Westminster between 2004 and 2005. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated it authorized the charges after reviewing evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police, which began its probe in September 2023 following a joint media investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s “Dispatches.” “We have today authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offences,” said Jaswant Narwal of the CPS in a press release. “We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023. We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.” Brand, who resides in southern England according to police, denied the allegations in a video posted on social media platform X Friday. “When I was young and single before I had my wife and family… I was a fool, man, I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord,” he said. “I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity, and I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.” He also thanked supporters for their messages. Known for roles in Hollywood films and UK television, Brand was married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012. In recent years, he has shifted to online commentary, amassing over 6 million YouTube subscribers with content on wellness and conspiracy theories, often referencing his past struggles with addiction. The case has drawn significant attention amid ongoing scrutiny of sexual misconduct allegations in the entertainment industry.
