The bodies of three women, believed to be aged between 20 and 30, have been recovered from the sea off Brighton beach in a tragedy that has left the local community in shock.

Emergency services were called to Brighton seafront at 5.45am on Wednesday, May 13, following reports of “concern for the welfare of a person in the water,” according to Sussex Police. Upon arrival, officers and paramedics recovered three bodies from the water near Madeira Drive, a road running along the seafront east of Brighton Palace Pier.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police described the incident as “tragic” and confirmed that fast-moving enquiries are ongoing. Speaking at a press conference, he said: “This is a tragic incident and fast-moving enquiries are ongoing to confirm the identities of these three women and understand exactly what has happened. Our priority right now is to identify all three women and contact their next of kin.”

The South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed that despite the best efforts of all those involved, the women were declared deceased at the scene. A multi-agency response was launched, involving HM Coastguard, three RNLI lifeboats from Brighton, and ambulance crews. The coastguard has since completed an extensive search of the water and confirmed they are not looking for anyone else.

It is understood that the women may have entered the water from the beach near where they were found before getting into difficulty. Reports indicate there were rough seas off the coast of Brighton on Wednesday morning, with strong winds reaching up to 41mph and a severe undercurrent pushing water eastwards from Brighton Pier toward the marina. A witness described the conditions as too dangerous for swimming, with waves crashing forcefully against the shoreline.

Contrary to some initial reports, sources have indicated the women are not currently believed to have attended a nightclub before entering the water. Sussex Police stated that a number of lines of enquiry are still being explored, including reviewing CCTV footage from nearby seafront businesses and properties.

The beach area east of the Volks Railway Black Rock car park was cordoned off for several hours while forensic teams worked at the scene. The beach has since reopened and officers have left the area.

Local officials have expressed their deep sorrow following the discovery. Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of three women off the Brighton coast this morning. My heart goes out to the friends and family of these women and on behalf of Brighton and Hove, I send sincere condolences. I would also like to thank the emergency services for their quick response and combined efforts. It is heart-breaking that their recovery efforts have ended in such tragic circumstances.”

Describing the impact on the city, Sankey added: “It is probably the most devastating news that I’ve received in this city for a very long time. I can’t think of anything more tragic or more horrendous really.”

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne described the incident as “awful” and urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues. She said: “We must allow police to investigate and refrain from speculation at this time.”

Peter Kyle, MP for Hove and Portslade, issued a statement saying: “News today in Brighton, where the bodies of three women were recovered from the sea off Kemp Town, was a sobering and heartbreaking reminder that our families, neighbours, and communities are what is important. I am desperately upset for the families and friends of these women.”

A local resident, Jilly Francis, told the BBC the tragedy was “horrifying” and described it as the worst incident she has known to happen in the area. Another resident, Judy, who lives near Brighton Marina, told the BBC: “It just makes it feel more poignant and frightening actually that it can happen so close.”

Police are continuing their efforts to formally identify the three women and locate their immediate families. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation has been asked to contact Sussex Police online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Ledmore.
