The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called on major artificial intelligence companies to be more transparent about the environmental impact of their rapidly expanding technologies, warning that the industry’s growing energy consumption and carbon footprint could undermine global climate goals.

Speaking on the need for stronger accountability in emerging technologies, Guterres stressed that while AI is transforming economies and improving productivity worldwide, its hidden environmental costs must not be ignored. He urged tech firms to publicly disclose how much energy their systems consume, the emissions generated by large-scale data centres, and the sustainability measures being adopted to reduce harm.

AI systems, particularly large language models and generative tools, require massive computing power. This demand has led to increased reliance on energy-intensive data centres, many of which are still powered by fossil fuels in several regions. Environmental experts have warned that without regulation and transparency, the sector’s carbon footprint could grow significantly over the next decade.

The UN chief’s remarks add to growing global concern over the environmental implications of artificial intelligence, especially as governments race to adopt AI in public services, defence, healthcare, and economic planning.

He also called for international cooperation to ensure that AI development aligns with climate targets under the Paris Agreement, emphasizing that innovation should not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.
