More Than 45 Killed in Massive Explosion at Explosives Storage Facility in Myanmar
More than 45 people have been killed and about 70 others injured following a powerful explosion at a building reportedly used to store mining explosives in northeastern Myanmar, according to rescue workers and local media reports. The blast occurred on Sunday in Kaungtup village, located in Namhkam Township of Shan State, near the Chinese border.
Rescuers at the scene said at least 46 bodies, including six children, had been recovered by Sunday evening, while dozens of injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency teams continued search and rescue operations amid fears that the death toll could rise further.
The explosion occurred at a facility believed to be storing large quantities of explosives used in mining and quarry operations. Preliminary investigations suggest the materials included gelignite, a powerful explosive commonly used in mining but known to become unstable if improperly stored or handled.
The blast also caused extensive destruction to surrounding communities, with reports indicating that more than 100 homes were damaged by the force of the explosion. Images circulating on local media showed thick smoke rising from the site and widespread debris scattered across the area.
The affected area is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed organization that has maintained control of parts of Shan State following clashes with Myanmar’s military government. The group acknowledged that explosives had been stored at the site for mining activities and said an investigation into the cause of the blast was underway.
The tragedy comes as Myanmar continues to grapple with instability and conflict following the military takeover in 2021. While authorities and local organizations have begun relief efforts for affected residents, questions remain over the safety measures in place for storing hazardous explosive materials in populated areas.
