Russian Soldier Kills Four in Gun Rampage in Occupied Crimea

A Russian serviceman has been arrested after allegedly carrying out a deadly shooting rampage in the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, killing four people; including a fellow soldier and three civilians, and injuring several others in an attack that has shocked the region.

According to Russian-installed authorities in Crimea, the incident occurred in the village of Khmelnytske, near the city of Sevastopol. The gunman reportedly first opened fire on fellow soldiers, killing one serviceman and seriously wounding another before leaving the military area and turning his weapon on civilians.

Officials said the attacker then entered the village, where he shot and killed three local residents; identified as two men aged 71 and 59 and a 64-year-old woman. At least three other civilians were wounded during the attack and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, confirmed that the suspect had been detained shortly after the shootings. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation, but no official motive has been disclosed. Investigators are examining whether the attack stemmed from personal grievances, mental health issues or other factors.

The shooting has raised fresh concerns over discipline and security within Russian military units stationed in occupied Crimea, a strategically important peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Crimea has served as a major military logistics hub and has frequently come under Ukrainian drone and missile attacks, heightening tensions across the region.

While attacks linked to the war have become increasingly common in Crimea, incidents in which a Russian soldier turns his weapon on fellow troops and civilians remain relatively rare. The latest shooting has prompted renewed scrutiny of conditions within Russian military formations deployed in occupied territories.

Russian authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, and officials say the investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly rampage.
