U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has sharply criticized NATO allies for what he described as insufficient defense contributions and announced a comprehensive review of the American military presence across Europe, raising questions about the future of U.S. security commitments on the continent.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers, Hegseth argued that many European nations continue to rely too heavily on the United States for their security while failing to invest adequately in their own military capabilities. He said the current arrangement places an unfair burden on American taxpayers and service members.

“The era of Europe depending almost entirely on the United States for its defense must come to an end,” Hegseth said, urging allies to assume greater responsibility for regional security and defense spending.

The Pentagon chief announced that the Department of Defense will conduct a strategic review of U.S. troop deployments, military infrastructure and operational commitments throughout Europe. The review is expected to assess whether American forces are positioned effectively to meet current security challenges while aligning with broader U.S. strategic priorities.

Although Hegseth did not specify potential troop reductions, defense officials said the review would examine force levels in several European countries where thousands of American troops are stationed. The United States currently maintains major military installations in countries including Germany, Poland, Italy and United Kingdom.

His comments come amid ongoing debates within NATO over defense spending targets. While a growing number of member states have increased military budgets in recent years, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Washington has continued to press allies to contribute a larger share of collective defense costs.

Several European officials responded cautiously to Hegseth’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of transatlantic unity at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions. NATO leaders have repeatedly argued that cooperation between North America and Europe remains essential for addressing threats posed by Russia, terrorism and emerging security challenges.

Security analysts noted that any significant reduction in U.S. forces could reshape NATO’s defense posture and alter strategic calculations across Europe. However, they stressed that the review does not necessarily indicate an immediate withdrawal of troops or a weakening of the alliance.

The announcement comes as NATO continues efforts to strengthen its eastern flank and maintain support for Ukraine amid ongoing regional security concerns. European governments are expected to closely monitor the outcome of the Pentagon’s review for indications of future U.S. military policy.

Despite the criticism, Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to NATO, describing the alliance as a cornerstone of Western security. However, he insisted that long-term stability requires greater burden-sharing among member states and a more balanced distribution of defense responsibilities.

The findings of the review are expected to be presented to the White House and Congress later this year, potentially shaping future decisions regarding America’s military footprint in Europe and its role within the NATO alliance.
