A newborn baby, just 18 days old, has been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela, surviving for approximately 32 to 37 hours after twin earthquakes devastated the country’s northern coast.

The miraculous rescue occurred in La Guaira, the hardest-hit city north of the capital Caracas, where rescue teams worked under floodlights late on June 26.

Video footage shared on social media shows rescuers carefully passing the baby, wrapped in a blanket, from person to person before gently cleaning the infant with tissues to applause from the crowd . According to Andreina Quintero, who posted the video, the baby was unharmed despite the lengthy ordeal.

About an hour after the child was rescued, the mother was also pulled alive from the debris.

Medical staff suggested the mother most likely saved her child’s life by shielding the baby with her own body or another object while they were trapped.

The U.S. State Department shared video of the operation, posting, “Against impossible odds, hope endures. Every life saved is a victory”.

The back-to-back earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck on June 24 and have killed at least 1,430 people, with more than 50,000 reported missing.

International rescue teams from at least 17 countries continue to race against the clock as the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors draws near.
