Nigerian Athlete Killed in US Robbery Days Before MBA Graduation
The Nigerian community in the United States has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Oluwabukola Pereira, who was shot dead just days before her scheduled graduation from Xavier University.
Pereira was reportedly killed on May 8 during an apparent robbery incident at Arise Auto Center, where she worked in the United States.
According to local reports, authorities from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office have launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, although officials are yet to confirm the exact motive behind the attack.
A staff member at the auto centre, Don Simpson, told local media that Pereira attempted to pursue a suspect who allegedly fled with about $1,500 before she was shot.
“She was loyal, good and brave. She came to this country trying to build a good life,” Simpson said.
The late Pereira, originally from Nigeria, was expected to graduate on May 16 with a Master of Business Administration degree. She had also reportedly secured admission for another postgraduate programme in Business Analytics later this year.
In a statement, Xavier University President Colleen Hanycz described Pereira as a woman known for her positivity, strong faith and generous spirit.
“Friends describe her as kind, honest, intelligent and beautiful — inside and out,” the statement read.
Beyond academics, Pereira was actively involved in athletics and belonged to Cincinnati’s Elite running group, participating in several competitions, including the Flying Pig Marathon.
Family members described her as “a bright and shining star” devoted to worship, prayer and helping others. She was also said to be preparing for her wedding later this year after getting engaged in 2025.
Investigators said the suspect is believed to be a man between the ages of 25 and 35, described as Black or Hispanic, with braided hair or dreadlocks. He was last seen heading toward the Gardner Park area.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public with useful information to contact Crime Stoppers as investigations continue.
