Suspected Suicide Bombing at Police Station Kills at Least 14 in Pakistan

At least 14 people have been killed and more than 18 others injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a police station in Kabal, a town in Pakistan’s Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the resurgence of militant violence in the country’s northwest.

According to local police officials, the explosion occurred near the Kabal Police Station, where a large pro-police and anti-militancy rally was taking place. Authorities said the attacker was stopped by police personnel for a security check before detonating the explosives, preventing him from reaching the gathering but causing devastating casualties at the station’s entrance.

Regional police official Fida Hussain said the victims included five police officers and eight civilians, while the 14th person killed is believed to have been the suicide bomber. More than 18 people sustained injuries, several of them critically, and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

The rally had been organised by local residents and community leaders to protest the growing presence of militants in the region and to express support for security forces combating extremist groups. Hundreds of people had gathered near the police station when the blast ripped through the area, sending panic-stricken participants fleeing as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, security officials suspect the involvement of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, which has intensified attacks against police, military personnel and government installations in recent years. The militant group has been attempting to re-establish its influence in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa despite sustained military operations.

Following the attack, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing, describing it as a cowardly act of terrorism. They expressed condolences to the families of those killed, wished the injured a speedy recovery and reaffirmed the government’s determination to eliminate terrorism from the country. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also denounced the attack and praised the security personnel who prevented an even greater tragedy by intercepting the bomber before he reached the main crowd.

Security forces have launched an investigation into the bombing and are conducting operations to identify and arrest anyone suspected of assisting the attacker. Authorities have increased security across the Swat Valley and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid fears of further attacks.

The bombing is the latest in a series of deadly militant attacks that have rocked Pakistan’s northwestern region this year, underscoring the country’s ongoing struggle against insurgent groups. The latest violence is expected to intensify pressure on the government to strengthen counterterrorism measures while addressing growing public concerns over security in the volatile border region.
