Europe Sees Surge in Sexually Transmitted Infections, Health Officials Warn

Cases of Gonorrhoea and Syphilis have reached record levels across Europe, according to newly released data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), raising concerns among health officials about the growing spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The ECDC reported a sharp increase in infections in recent years, with gonorrhoea cases seeing one of the steepest rises. Syphilis infections have also surged significantly, particularly among young people and men who have sex with men, a group identified as being at higher risk.

Health experts attribute the spike to multiple factors, including reduced condom use, increased sexual activity following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, and improved testing and reporting systems across European countries. The agency also noted that antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhoea is becoming an increasing concern, making some cases harder to treat.

According to the data, countries across Western and Central Europe have recorded notable increases, with some nations reporting their highest STI figures in decades. Public health officials warn that if left unchecked, the trend could place additional strain on healthcare systems and complicate treatment efforts.

The ECDC has urged governments to strengthen sexual health education, expand access to testing and treatment, and promote safer sex practices, including consistent condom use. It also called for increased surveillance to monitor the spread of drug-resistant strains.

Experts emphasize that early detection and treatment remain critical in controlling the spread of both infections, as untreated gonorrhoea and syphilis can lead to serious long-term health complications, including infertility and increased risk of HIV transmission.
