Disaster/Tragedy
Explosion During Terminal Restart Shakes Qatar’s Energy Sector
An explosion at a major gas export terminal in Qatar has injured at least 54 people and left 18 others missing, according to emergency officials, in what is being described as one of the country’s most serious industrial accidents in recent years.
The blast occurred during operations to restart the liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility following maintenance work. Witnesses reported hearing a powerful explosion followed by a large fire and thick plumes of smoke rising above the terminal.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters, medical personnel, and search-and-rescue units, were rapidly deployed to the site. Authorities said dozens of injured workers were transported to hospitals in Doha and nearby areas, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Qatari officials confirmed that efforts were continuing to locate 18 workers who remained unaccounted for hours after the incident. Search teams were combing damaged sections of the facility amid concerns about structural instability and lingering fire hazards.
The terminal is believed to be part of Qatar’s extensive LNG export infrastructure, which plays a crucial role in supplying natural gas to markets across Europe and Asia. Initial reports suggested the explosion occurred during technical procedures associated with bringing parts of the facility back online after scheduled maintenance.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the blast. Investigators are examining whether equipment failure, a gas leak, or operational issues contributed to the incident. Officials stressed that it was too early to speculate on the exact circumstances.
The accident has raised concerns within global energy markets, given Qatar’s status as one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas. Analysts said any prolonged disruption could affect energy supplies and prices, particularly in regions heavily dependent on Qatari LNG shipments.
Government officials said a full investigation has been launched and pledged transparency regarding the findings. They also emphasized that emergency measures were being taken to secure the site and prevent further incidents.
As rescue operations continue, messages of support have been sent from governments and energy industry leaders around the world, while families of affected workers await updates on those still missing.
