Global food prices climbed to their highest level in more than three years in April, according to the latest report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The agency said its Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices of widely traded food commodities, recorded a significant increase driven by rising costs of cereals, meat and dairy products.

According to the FAO, supply disruptions, strong global demand and continuing economic uncertainties contributed to the latest rise in prices. The increase marks the highest level recorded by the index since early 2022, raising concerns about food affordability in several parts of the world.

Analysts say adverse weather conditions in some major agricultural producing regions, combined with transportation challenges and geopolitical tensions, have continued to put pressure on global food markets.

The FAO noted that grain prices rose amid concerns over lower harvest expectations in some exporting countries, while meat prices also increased due to stronger import demand and tighter supplies. Dairy products and vegetable oils similarly contributed to the overall rise in the index.

Economists warn that higher international food prices could worsen inflationary pressures in many developing countries, particularly those heavily dependent on food imports. Several governments are already facing growing concerns over the cost of living and food security.

Despite the increase, the FAO stated that global food supply levels remain relatively stable overall, although market volatility could persist in the coming months depending on weather patterns, trade conditions and ongoing global conflicts.

The latest report comes as international agencies continue to monitor food security challenges affecting vulnerable populations across Africa, Asia and parts of Latin America.
