PRESIDENT TINUBU HOSTS AWUJALE OF IJEBULAND, HARPS ON ROLE OF TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN NATIONAL UNITY
Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has again reiterated the importance of traditional institutions in fostering unity and development in the country. President Tinubu stated this while playing host to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, at his residence in Lagos. The meeting highlighted the crucial role of traditional institutions in fostering national cohesion, governance, and economic development in Nigeria. Taking to his official X (Formerly Twitter) handle @officiaBAT, President Tinubu wrote, “Now more than ever, the role of our traditional institutions is crucial for fostering national cohesion, governance, and economic development at various levels.” He emphasized the need to build partnerships and cultivate a strong national identity, stating that “this identity should embody our values as a nation while fostering progress and prosperity for all citizens.” The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, is the political and spiritual ruler of Ijebu-Ode, the capital of the Ijebus in Nigeria. Born on May 10, 1934, he was installed as Awujale on April 2, 1960, and is a member of the House of Anikinaiya, one of the four ruling houses of Ijebu Kingdom. In a related development, President Tinubu conferred the second-highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON), on Oba Adetona during his 90th birthday celebration. The President praised Oba Adetona’s wisdom, dedication, and service to the people of Ijebuland, saying, “Kabiyesi Adetona deserves all the accolades we can accord him because he earned them”.
