A potentially disastrous incident was averted on Monday when a building under construction collapsed onto the Redeemed Christian Church of God Liberty Parish in Shomolu, Lagos. The collapse occurred during the decking phase of the construction process, according to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, as workers had reportedly evacuated the site before the arrival of emergency responders. The church members who were present during the incident also escaped unhurt. “No injuries were reported,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Worshippers present in the church escaped unhurt.”

The collapsed building’s concrete pillars fell onto the RCCG Liberty Parish, located at No. 5, Craig Street, causing significant damage. LASEMA has sealed off the scene to prevent secondary accidents and has advised residents and bystanders to steer clear of the collapsed structure.

The agency has concluded its search and rescue operation, ensuring that no one is trapped under the rubble. “Search and rescue operation has been concluded,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring building safety and structural integrity in construction projects.
