BENUE STATE BLOODSHED DEMANDS JUSTICE, NOT EMPTY PROMISES

By Augustine Eigbe, Ph.D The charred villages and mass graves in Benue State stand as grim monuments to the failure of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution’s Section 14(2)(b), which promised that ‘the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.’ The constitutional mandate degenerates into cruel satire amid the state’s unrelenting bloodshed. Coordinated terrorist and bandit attacks slaughter villagers, forcibly displacing thousands from their ancestral homelands. These killings are the direct result of a systemic failure to uphold the most basic function of government. It mirrors the constitution’s duality, noble on paper yet dysfunctional in practice. What makes these killings particularly unconscionable is their predictability. The constitutional mandate of ‘public safety’ has been overtaken by an unsurprising cycle of impunity where warnings go ignored, perpetrators remain unpunished, and mass burials become normalised. The systematic extermination of families in their homes, the burning of children alive, and the forced displacement of entire communities cannot be characterised as farmers and herders ‘clashes.’ These constitute crimes against humanity exhibiting genocidal patterns. This cycle has repeated for years, and each time the government pledges to ‘bring perpetrators to justice,’ but not a single high-profile prosecution has occurred. Instead, victims watch as killers walk free, shielded by a broken justice system. This is not merely a governance failure or breakdown; it constitutes moral dereliction, as the government’s inaction embeds complicity. The bloodstained soil of Benue State demands justice, not empty platitudes. True reconciliation cannot grow from the shallow soil of political rhetoric. It requires the government to act, unequivocally fulfilling its constitutional duty to security and justice. The people of the state need no more promises; they need proof that their government values their lives. Reconciliation demands action, not press statements. The mass murderers must face justice, displaced farmers must return safely, and killers’ sponsors must be exposed. Otherwise, the wounds will remain indelible for generations to come. Without justice for the rivers of blood spilled across its villages, the state can achieve no true reconciliation: no healing, no closure, no peace. These massacres transcend mere tragedy; they are crimes against humanity that demand swift prosecution through the justice system. There can be no reconciliation while the architects of these atrocities remain free to plot the next round of killings.True peace cannot be built upon unmarked graves and unpunished crimes.Justice delayed has become justice denied through a cruel cycle of violence and empty rhetoric by the government. The path to sincere reconciliation must begin with uncompromising truth. It must be acknowledged that these are not spontaneous clashes between farmers and herders, but rather coordinated campaigns of terror by marauding killers. Until the government protects all Nigerians equally, prosecutes perpetrators decisively, and ensures displaced families return safely, true reconciliation will remain historical fiction, its promise nothing but an insult to the dead and betrayal of the living. GOVERNOR ALIA REVEALS SHOCKING DETAILS OF BENUE ATTACKS

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has disclosed that the recent deadly attacks in Benue communities were carried out by heavily armed gunmen who first clashed with military and police personnel before targeting civilians. In an interview with Arise News, Governor Alia revealed that the attackers infiltrated the community via a nearby river, initiating a fierce confrontation with security forces stationed in the area. “It lasted for two hours. There is a military checkpoint and there are police as well. Here is how it happens. The river is not too far from this axis. So we understand that they came by route of the river,” Governor Alia explained. The attackers, described as large in number, moved tactically through the riverine area bordering Nasarawa State. According to Governor Alia, they were initially pushed back by security forces but managed to execute their attack due to their sheer numbers. “When they got to this town, the first effort they did was to go attack the military and the police who usually manned the road around there. But they had a big push back and ran back. But they came in numbers, they usually came in huge numbers,” he added. The attacks have resulted in significant loss of life, with over 200 people reportedly killed in the Yelewata area of Benue State. Governor Alia’s account suggests that the attackers exploited the river’s proximity to avoid early detection and execute their deadly assault with precision. The recent surge in violent incidents across Benue communities has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the security presence in the region. Governor Alia has expressed frustration over the violence, describing it as terrorism and accusing some serving politicians in the National Assembly of sponsoring the attacks.

FORMER SENATE PRESIDENT DAVID MARK WARNS OF SELF-DEFENSE IN BENUE IF GOVERNMENT FAILS TO ACT

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has expressed deep concern over the continued and escalating killings of citizens in Benue State, warning that the situation may compel residents to resort to self-help and defend themselves if the government continues to fail in its fundamental duty of protecting lives and property. Senator Mark decried the deteriorating security situation in Benue, which has led to the loss of hundreds of lives and widespread destruction of property. He described the killings as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable.” According to him, the primary responsibility of any government is the welfare and security of its citizens, and any deviation from this mandate constitutes a gross disservice to the people. “This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. Government must rise to its responsibility, or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he said. Senator Mark urged the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional obligation to safeguard the lives and property of all Nigerians. He also called on the state government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, to intensify its efforts in ensuring the safety of the people. Additionally, Senator Mark appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies in identifying and apprehending those behind these heinous crimes. To the people of Benue, Senator Mark offered a message of solidarity and resilience. “This is a trying moment for our people,” he said. “We must unite, mobilize, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear.” Despite the ongoing provocations, he urged the people to remain law-abiding, stay united, and uphold the enduring spirit of being their brother’s keeper.

OVER 200 KILLED IN FRESH HERDSMEN ATTACK ON BENUE COMMUNITY

A devastating attack by suspected herdsmen militia on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State has left over 200 people dead, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), women, and children. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, also saw houses and properties burnt beyond imagination. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the community around 11 pm on Friday, shooting indiscriminately and overpowering the youths and police personnel who tried to resist them. “It started last night at about 11 pm when Fulani terrorists came from the Western part of Yelwata and started shooting,” said Matthew Mnyan, a community leader in Yelwata and former acting Chairman of Benue SUBEB. Mnyan added that the attackers poured petrol on stalls in the market and burnt them, killing people who had taken refuge there. “In those stalls, we had people who moved from places like Branch Udei and people displaced from nearby villages, who sleep in the stalls because of the nearness of the Police and Soldiers there. And we learnt no soldier came out to defend the people,” he said. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. “As of now, from the names they are putting together, and families that were burnt and killed are running to over 200 now,” Mnyan said. Chief Dennis Gbongbon, President of the Association of United Farmers Benue Valley (AUFBV), corroborated the attack, stating that suspected Lakurawa bandits and allegedly herders killed over 62 IDPs and farmers, burning houses with families beyond imagination. Gbongbon said, “Today about 2 am, we had a very disturbing security threat to Tiv farmers in Yelwata community of Guma LGA. The dead toll shall rise as search and rescue mission is on. Many were burnt in stores where they were sleeping.” He added that 85% of the victims were IDPs who ran from Antsa, Dooka, Kadarko, and Giza areas, seeking refuge in Yelwata market and residences. In a separate attack in Daudu, five soldiers were killed, including one of the rank of Captain. The attackers reportedly camped close to Daudu with over 200 terrorists. Mnyan lamented that the attack was planned and coordinated, with the aim of taking over Benue State. “Everybody is aware that the people want to take over Benue state. There are no two ways about it. They only want to grab the land,” he said. The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack, with the Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, stating that security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange, killing some of them. “But it’s with great sadness that we report that some individuals lost their lives and others sustained injuries,” Edet said, pledging the command’s commitment to keeping everyone safe.

BENUE UNDER SIEGE: GOVERNOR ALIA RAISES ALARM OVER TERRORIST ATTACKS

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has sounded the alarm over the escalating security crisis in the state, describing it as a coordinated wave of terrorist attacks that go beyond the traditional herder-farmer clashes. Speaking on a Television Program, Governor Alia emphasized that the pattern and precision of the attacks point to a larger, more organized threat. “We are under siege,” Governor Alia exclaimed, highlighting the reliability of daily intelligence gathered, with 60 to 65% of it being accurate. According to him, the attacks are “directed, planned, and executed,” bearing all the hallmarks of terrorism. The governor described the attackers as professional killers engaging in hit-and-run tactics reminiscent of guerrilla warfare. “For some reason, none of them is ever caught, they come in in the thick of the night, hit, run, and nobody sees a trace. So, it is some terrorism that is eating us up,” he remarked. Governor Alia’s comments come amid growing concern over the deteriorating security situation in Benue and other parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. The state has witnessed a surge in violence in recent weeks, with multiple local government areas experiencing deadly assaults that have claimed numerous lives. The governor’s appeal for unity among the people of Benue State highlights the gravity of the situation. According to him, the nature of the violence has evolved into something far more insidious, necessitating a concerted effort to tackle the menace. Governor Alia’s frustration with the security situation is not new, having previously lamented the military’s inability to tame the killers. The governor’s latest statement underscores the urgent need for effective solutions to address the security challenges facing Benue State.

GROUP CONDEMNS BRUTAL ATTACKS ON IDOMA COMMUNITY BY SUSPECTED HERDSMEN

The Ochetoha K’Idoma National Forum has expressed outrage and deep sorrow over the recent violent attack on the Edikwu Ankpali community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen. In a statement, Secretary General of the group, Chief Dr. Paul Edeh, condemned the attack, which claimed several lives and resulted in the abduction of some residents from the nearby Ijaha community. Dr. Edeh said the group extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims in Edikwu Ankpali and the surrounding communities, particularly those who have lost loved ones in this senseless act of violence. “We also pray for strength and comfort for the abducted residents and their families during this harrowing time,” Dr. Edeh added. The Ochetoha K’Idoma National Forum is deeply troubled by the escalating frequency and brutality of these attacks, which have now extended to Edikwu Ankpali near Ugbokpo, the headquarters of Apa LGA. Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, President General of the group, noted that despite urgent calls for intervention, the lack of decisive action by security agencies has emboldened the perpetrators, leaving communities increasingly vulnerable. The group has called on the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to demonstrate the political will to implement measures to protect the lives and property of the Idoma people. They also urged the government to enforce existing laws, including the Open Grazing Prohibition Law, and deploy all necessary resources to halt these attacks. The Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC), led by the Och’Idoma, HRM Dr. John Odogbo, has also issued a press statement following an emergency meeting with Local Government Council Chairmen in Idoma land. The IATC expressed grief over the tragic loss of lives and ordered all Fulani herdsmen to vacate farmlands in the zone to enable farmers to resume agricultural activities without threat or intimidation. Dr. Edeh commended the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for promptly delegating his Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Paul Biam, who led all the Security Chiefs to Apa for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. However, the group strongly urged the Governor to ensure that no stone is left unturned until all perpetrators of this violence are apprehended and brought to justice.

BENUE STATE UNDER ATTACK: 23 KILLED IN SEPARATE HERDSMEN ATTACKS

At least 23 persons have been reportedly killed in separate attacks by suspected armed herdsmen in four Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State. The communities that witnessed the attacks in the last 24 hours were in Guma, Logo, Ukum, and Kwande LGAs. A source in Kwande LGA, Dr. Ray Anumve, disclosed that armed herdsmen and suspected Jukun militants attacked Turan communities in Kwande LGA, killing nine persons. “The coordinated bloody attacks were carried out by armed herdsmen and suspected Jukun-speaking assailants across multiple locations in Turan, Kwande LGA of the State, resulting in deaths, injuries, and displacement,” Anumve said. The assailants were said to have spoken Fulfulde and Jukun, and attacked farmers who were returning from their farms. “They also attack Anwase, Mkomon Area, Mbaikyor Council Ward, killing one Mr. Iortsor, while at Waya, Yaav Council Ward, a motorcycle rider was shot in the stomach, resulting in protrusion of his intestines,” Anumve added. In Ukum LGA, nine persons were confirmed dead, with more dead bodies being recovered from the bush. The victims included Jonathan Ordooga, Aondogu Torse, Cheater Torse, Yagba Torse, Tersugh Mbaaiiga, Terhemen Emmanuel, Henenshima Apirgwa, and Orfega Atuku. The attacks have caused widespread fear and displacement, with many people fleeing their homes despite it being the farming season. A source in Guma LGA said there was mounting tension in Yelewata, Nyiev Council Ward, following the flooding of the community by armed herdsmen from neighbouring Nasarawa State. The Benue State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Mathew Abor, confirmed the attack in Ukum LGA but said he could not ascertain those responsible for the killing. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.

CNPP AND CSOs ACCUSE BENUE CHIEF JUDGE OF TRIBUNAL MANIPULATION, DEMAND REMOVAL

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and the Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have jointly raised alarm over what they describe as a dangerous attempt by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, to manipulate the Local Government Election Petition Appeals Tribunal for political purposes. In a strongly worded statement signed by Comrade James Ezema, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of CNPP, and Alhaji Ali Abacha, National Secretary of CNCSOs, the groups alleged that Justice Ikpambese orchestrated the removal of Justice Maimuna Ikwulono from the Appeals Tribunal for maintaining her judicial independence. Justice Mohammed has since been appointed in her place, raising serious questions about the credibility of the tribunal’s work. The CNPP and CNCSOs cited credible reports linking the Chief Judge’s actions to an ongoing political feud with Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia and an alleged alliance with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. George Akume. They allege that Justice Ikpambese, who is expected to retire next year, has been promised the Senatorial ticket for Benue North-East (Zone A) in exchange for using his office to weaken the Governor’s political base by removing elected local government chairmen aligned against Akume’s interests. The groups noted that so far, tribunal judgments have led to the removal of four out of seven chairmen in Zone A, with no chairmen removed in Zone B — a clear indication of targeted political maneuvering. They referenced video evidence showing Justice Ikpambese at a political event, where he reportedly boasted about his intention to frustrate Governor Alia by influencing tribunal outcomes through selective appointments. The CNPP and CNCSOs have issued a stern warning to Justice Ikpambese: “If the Chief Judge does not immediately discontinue his self-confessed plans to use the Local Government Tribunal to frustrate the Governor and the electorate of Benue State by manipulating tribunal outcomes through selective appointments, the CNPP and CNCSOs will be left with no option but to mobilize mass protests to occupy the National Judicial Council (NJC) headquarters until he is removed from office.” They concluded: “The integrity of our judiciary must never be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. We demand immediate corrective actions to protect democratic institutions and uphold the sanctity of justice in Benue State.”

BLACK TUESDAY IN OTUKPO COMMUNITY AS SUSPECTED HERDSMEN LAUNCH BRUTAL ATTACK ON OTOBI-AKPA IN BENUE STATE

Suspected armed herdsmen have launched a brutal attack on Otobi-Akpa in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack occurred on Tuesday evening, around 5:30 p.m., with reports indicating that an unverified number of residents were killed and hundreds displaced. Hon. Angbo Kennedy, the lawmaker representing Otukpo-Akpa Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident. A distressed resident, Edwin Emma, during a live broadcast on AIT, appealed for urgent government and security intervention, stating, “We are being attacked by herdsmen… My wife and children are fleeing as I speak.” This latest attack is not the first in the area, as Otobi, which hosts the Federal Ministry of Water Resources Multipurpose Dam, has faced multiple attacks this April. A security guard at the dam facility was reportedly killed days before this assault. According to reports, the guard’s killing was part of a troubling wave of violence that has gripped the Otukpo axis in recent weeks. Journalist Meddy Olotu described the scale of the attack as massive, alleging that over 100 armed assailants launched coordinated strikes across the community. As of the time of this report, no official statement has been released by the Benue State Police Command or other authorities, and casualty figures remain unconfirmed. This incident is the latest in a series of attacks in Benue State, which has suffered repeated assaults from suspected herdsmen over the years, leading to thousands of deaths and mass displacement of residents. In a similar incident, gunmen attacked three communities in Benue’s Otukpo LGA, including Okpomaju, Odudaje, and Asa 2, with residents fleeing into the forest for safety.
