PDP GOVERNORS APPOINT COMMITTEES FOR NATIONAL CONVENTION AND ZONING OF PARTY OFFICES

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDPGF) has appointed Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State as chair of the committee on zoning of its party offices. Also appointed were Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State as vice chair and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State as secretary of the committee. Chief Press Secretary to Governor of Bayelsa State, Daniel Alabrah, signed the communique issued after the forum’s meeting on Monday at the Oyo State Governor’s Office in Ibadan. Alabrah stated that the forum recommended the constitution of a National Convention Committee headed by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State with Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State as vice chair and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State as secretary. The PDPGF Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, who read the communique, stated that the governors resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or be part of a merger of political parties ahead of the 2027 elections. “Noting the nationwide speculations about possible merger of political parties, groups and/or associations, the Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger,” Mohammed said. Diri, Lawal, and Mutfwang will work together to address all issues relating to zoning of party offices. The National Convention Committee, headed by Fintiri, will oversee the party’s national convention scheduled for August 28-30, 2025, in Kano. The forum also restated its decision to approach the Supreme Court to give a clear interpretation on the declaration of a state of emergency in any state and reaffirmed its commitment to stand with suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. Mohammed said, “The Forum reasserts our collective determination to avert a rape of our constitutional democracy hence the decision of approaching the Supreme Court to give a clear cut verdict on the interpretation of the provisions of the law on the declaration of State of Emergency in any state.” The PDP governors expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the country, particularly in Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo States, and called for a review of priorities and strategies to tackle security breaches. They condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and commiserated with the government and people of the state. The forum resolved to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27, 2025, in conjunction with the National Working Committee and other relevant organs of the party.

PDP GOVERNORS BACK UDE-OKOYE AS NATIONAL SECRETARY, DEMAND NEC MEETING BY MARCH 13

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has thrown its weight behind Sunday Ude-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary, following the Court of Appeal’s judgment affirming his position. The forum, which comprises governors from PDP-led states, urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to implement the court’s ruling without delay. The decision was part of a seven-point communiqué issued at the end of the forum’s first meeting of 2025, held on Friday, January 31, at the Government House in Asaba, Delta State. The governors acknowledged the ongoing efforts to resolve the internal crisis within the party and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding party discipline and legal processes. According to the communiqué, “The Forum noted with delight the ongoing efforts at resolving the crisis in the National Working Committee on the position of the National Secretary and has reaffirmed its support for the Court of Appeal judgment; consequently, the Forum advised the NWC to set up the machinery for the effective implementation of the court judgment.” The governors also called on the NWC to reschedule the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to March 13, 2025, after examining the legal notices required for its valid convocation. The meeting was used to assess the state of the nation and the performance of PDP-led states. The governors expressed concern over the Federal Government’s macroeconomic policies, noting that they had inflicted hardship on Nigerians. They called for an urgent review of these policies to alleviate the suffering of the people. “We urge the Federal Government to reconsider its economic policies to reduce the hardship faced by Nigerians,” they said. In a statement, Ude-Okoye lauded the governors for their determination and pledged to serve the party to the best of his ability. He encouraged party members to remain hopeful, assuring them that the PDP would regain power and help take Nigeria to greater heights. “PDP members should remain committed and resolute. They should remember that our party was built and anchored on truth by great Nigerians who founded the party,” he said. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the governors’ decision as a positive development. He stated that the PDP is a party that upholds the rule of law and respects court judgments. “Every organ of this party, as we have always said, respects the courts and will always implement their rulings. That’s what responsible institutions do, and that’s what is expected of us,” he said.
