NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY IN RECESSION UNDER TINUBU’S RULE – PETER OBI

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria, stating that it is “in recession” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obi made this declaration in a Democracy Day address, presenting a scathing critique of the country’s current political and socio-economic state. According to Obi, Nigeria no longer meets the basic criteria of a democracy, citing compromised elections, lack of transparency, and governance that ignores the will of the people. “In our present state, our dear country, Nigeria, cannot be justly classified as a democratic country. The vital indications of democracy are noticeably absent. Some do not even exist,” he said. Obi highlighted the alarming economic decline, stating that Nigeria’s GDP has plummeted from $364 billion to $188 billion, representing a nearly 50% decline. He also noted that per capita income has dropped from $1,640 to $835, while poverty affects over half of the population, with about 129 million people living below the poverty line. The former governor painted a dire picture of the state of social services, citing over 18.3 million out-of-school children, largely non-functional primary healthcare, and neglected public infrastructure. “We now have a situation where more tariffs mean more darkness,” Obi lamented, referencing the power sector’s poor performance. Obi emphasized that the rule of law is virtually non-existent, echoing concerns from civil society and the international community. He called on President Tinubu to acknowledge electoral failings and enact reforms, drawing parallels to former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s admission of election flaws in 2007. In his address, Obi urged President Tinubu to focus on domestic issues rather than international trips, suggesting that he tour the 36 Nigerian states to understand the plight of citizens. “Governing by remote is not what Nigerians need. You need to go round and get firsthand,” Obi advised. The Labour Party leader concluded by calling for introspection and reform, emphasizing the need for honest leadership and urgent policy change. “Now is the time to demand accountability, genuine leadership, and a government that prioritizes the welfare, security, and democracy of its people over empty rhetoric and propaganda,” he said.

PETER OBI RESPONDS TO BLACKMAIL CAMPAIGNS, SETS RECORD STRAIGHT

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has responded to malicious claims circulating about him, describing them as baseless and false. The claims, which have been spread by individuals who thrive on blackmail and spreading pain, include allegations that he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rome to discuss a purported ₦225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank. Obi has categorically denied these claims, stating that he has never sought an audience with, nor met, President Tinubu since he assumed office, except for a brief greeting during the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. “I was previously in Rome on the 9th of May for the lying in state of Pope Francis. Immediately after the mass and exchanging pleasantries, I went straight from Vatican City to London, and then back to Nigeria,” he explained. Obi also addressed claims that he owns Fidelity Bank, stating that he does not. “Throughout my career, I have served as Chairman/Director of 3 banks/Financial institutions, of which Fidelity is one of them. Fidelity has over 500,000 shareholders, none of whom hold a majority stake,” he said. In a statement laced with spiritual undertones, Obi prayed for those peddling falsehoods and engaging in blackmail, saying: “May God grant you the virtues of gratitude and understanding to know that we came here with nothing and will go with nothing, that they cannot profit from their evil ways.” Obi reiterated his commitment to a better Nigeria, saying: “A new Nigeria is Possible.”

OBEDIENT MOVEMENT HITS BACK AT AKPABIO OVER PETER OBI ATTACK

The Obidient Movement has strongly condemned Senator Godswill Akpabio’s recent attack on Peter Obi, describing it as unwarranted and lacking moral justification. In a statement signed by Director, Strategic Communications and Media Directorate, Nana Kazaure, the movement accused Akpabio of being disingenuous and hypocritical in his comments. Kazaure said Akpabio’s advice to Peter Obi to resolve the so-called crisis within the Labour Party before aspiring to lead the country was laughable, given the APC’s role in facilitating the illegal tenure of Julius Abure as Labour Party chairman despite a clear Supreme Court ruling against him. “There is, in fact, no crisis within the Labour Party. What persists is the shameless interference of the APC – Senator Akpabio’s party – in facilitating the illegal tenure of Julius Abure, despite the clear ruling of the Supreme Court,” Kazaure stated. The Obidient Movement also reminded Akpabio of his own controversies, including allegations of bribing senators with funds deposited into their accounts to “go and enjoy” amidst widespread hunger in the country. “Is this not the same Senate President who, in full view of national television, casually informed his colleagues that he had deposited funds into their accounts to ‘go and enjoy,’ even as the country groaned under the weight of unprecedented hunger inflicted by his party’s failed policies?” Kazaure asked. Kazaure further criticized Akpabio’s insensitive remarks during the #EndBadGovernance protests, where he said that while the people may continue their protests, he and others at the helm would continue to eat and drink from the commonwealth. “In any serious society, such a thoughtless, insensitive, and callous remark would have led to his immediate removal from office,” Kazaure added. The movement concluded by advising Akpabio to refrain from further attacks on Peter Obi, a man with a stellar record of public service that Akpabio cannot rival or undermine. Kazaure said Akpabio’s leadership has brought the Senate to a historic low, making him the worst Senate President in Nigeria’s democratic experience.

EDO STATE GOVERNMENT REJECTS PETER OBI’S CLAIMS ON GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

The Edo State Government has rejected claims made by Mr. Peter Obi regarding the integrity of the September 21st governorship election in Edo State. In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, the government described Obi’s allegations as unfounded and disrespectful to the will of the Edo people. Itua said the Edo State Governorship Election was conducted in accordance with the highest standards of electoral integrity, as observed by both local and international observers. “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ensured a level playing field, and the process was widely acknowledged as credible,” Itua noted. Itua further stated that Obi’s pronouncements are not supported by any credible evidence and appear to be driven by political expediency rather than a genuine concern for democratic principles. “It is regrettable that a figure of his standing would choose to undermine the democratic process with such baseless allegations,” Itua added. The Edo State Government urged Obi to retract his statements and respect the mandate freely given by the people of Edo State. “We implore him to contribute constructively to the nation’s democratic discourse rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric,” Itua said. Itua emphasized that the peace and stability of Edo State are paramount, and the Governor will not allow anyone to jeopardize the hard-earned democratic gains made so far.

PETER OBI PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE POPE FRANCIS AT THE VATICAN

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi paid tribute to the late Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome, where thousands of Catholic faithful gathered to bid farewell to the pontiff. Obi was joined by Cardinal Francis Arinze at the solemn lying-in-state ceremony. In a statement, Obi described Pope Francis as “a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference.” He added, “His life was a testament to leadership as a sacred duty, one rooted in compassion, truth, and service to the poor and marginalized.” Obi revealed that he had the opportunity to meet Pope Francis on three occasions, each leaving a lasting impression. “He radiated peace and inspired faith, and his presence was a quiet yet powerful reminder of the divine responsibility that leadership entails,” Obi said. The former governor of Anambra State also shared his experience as a member of Scholars Occultantes, an international circle of thinkers founded by Pope Francis. “The organisation, dedicated to truth, ethical leadership, and social transformation, gave me a deeper insight into the intellectual and moral force behind his teachings,” Obi explained. Obi urged leaders to reflect on Pope Francis’ life and commit to the values he upheld. “Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love,” he said. “May Pope Francis’ soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy live on in all who seek to serve humanity selflessly.”

PETER OBI CONDEMNS INTIMIDATION OF NYSC MEMBER OVER TIKTOK VIDEO

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly condemned the alleged intimidation of Ushie Rita, a National Youth Service Corps member, over a TikTok video criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In the video, Ushie Rita lamented the high cost of living in Nigeria, wondering what the president was doing to address the situation. The NYSC board swiftly summoned her over the video, prompting Obi to denounce the action as a growing trend to silence critics. “The National Youth Corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, recently had an experience that highlights a troubling trend in our nation—one where voices of reason and truth are met with intimidation rather than dialogue and engagement,” Obi said. Obi revealed that he has also faced threats and intimidation for expressing his opinions on government policies. “I now face daily intimidation, harassment, and name-calling simply for expressing solution-based views on government policies,” he stated. He emphasized that such actions are undemocratic and urged the current administration to reflect on its approach to dissent. “A government that silences its citizens is not democratic or one that is subject to accountability and good governance and is most often corrupt,” Obi warned. Obi encouraged Nigerians to stand firm and continue to advocate for a better Nigeria. “Do not let fear stifle your voice. Stand firm, support one another, and continue to advocate for Nigeria we all envision—a nation where freedom of speech is sacrosanct, and leadership is accountable to the people,” he said.

PETER OBI CALLS FOR SELFLESS LEADERSHIP IN NIGERIA

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide selfless and exemplary leadership to tackle the country’s worsening economic, security, and political challenges. In his New Year statement, Obi expressed concern over Nigeria’s decline, citing its ranking as one of the poverty capitals of the world, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty. He also noted that the country has fallen from being the largest economy in Africa to ranking fourth, with a GDP less than 50% of what it was a decade ago. Obi suggested several actions to address these challenges, including reducing the cost of governance, combating corruption, and tying future borrowing to regenerative investments. He also urged President Tinubu to visit each of Nigeria’s 36 states, national hospitals, and tertiary institutions to better understand the country’s problems. “We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now,” Obi quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., emphasizing the need for vigorous and positive actions to address Nigeria’s problems. He appealed to President Tinubu to dedicate at least 20% of 2025 to visiting each state, saying, “Such visits would give you the opportunity to better understand the dire economic and security situations across the country.” Obi also called on President Tinubu to ensure that future elections are credible and reflect the will of the people, saying, “Nigerians need to hear directly from you, not through your proxies. Quarterly updates on what you are doing to improve the situation in Nigeria is crucial.”
