Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed deep sadness over the tanker explosion that occurred on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The incident resulted in the loss of many lives and property. The Karu Bridge tanker explosion was a devastating incident caused by a tanker carrying fuel that lost control and crashed on the Karu Bridge, resulting in a massive explosion and fire. The fire rapidly spread, engulfing and destroying numerous vehicles, with reports indicating varying numbers of deaths and vehicles destroyed. In a statement, Senator Tinubu commiserated with the Minister of the FCT, His Excellency Nyesome Wike, the families of the deceased and injured, and the people of Abuja. “I urge owners and drivers of vehicles, especially articulated vehicles, to ensure the road worthiness and good condition of their vehicles before putting them on the road to avert a reoccurrence of such incidences,” she stated. Senator Tinubu prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in eternal peace and for their families and friends to have the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. She also wished the injured a speedy recovery. The incident caused significant traffic disruption and panic among residents and commuters. Emergency responders, including fire services and security agencies, were deployed to the scene to contain the fire and manage the situation. Investigations into the cause of the accident are underway. This is not the first time Senator Tinubu has shown compassion to victims of tragic incidents. Earlier this year, she donated N100 million to support victims of the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State.

VICE PRESIDENT KASHIM SHETTIMA MOURNS ENUGU TANKER EXPLOSION VICTIMS, CALLS FOR END TO TANKER ACCIDENTS

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, disclosed that Vice President Kashim Shettima has commiserated with the people and government of Enugu over the fuel tanker fire that claimed lives following an accident in the state. The Vice President described the incident as a sad reminder of the need to put an end to avoidable tanker accidents and explosions. The fuel tanker had veered off course and burst into flames along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Saturday. In a condolence message to families of those who lost their lives and the injured, Shettima noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very concerned and disturbed by the incident and other tanker explosions in recent times. “It was with a heart full of sadness that I received news of the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Ugwu Onyeama local government area of Enugu State. I am deeply saddened that another tanker accident would lead to the loss of lives of Nigerians, leaving others injured in the gory incident,” Shettima said. Shettima reassured Nigerians that the government will stop at nothing to put an end to tanker accidents on the roads, following President Tinubu’s directive. He promised that the government will engage relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to urgently forestall further tanker accidents and explosions across the country. “I express my profound condolences to the government and people of Enugu State, particularly the families that lost their loved ones and those that are undergoing treatment for various degrees of injuries in the hospitals,” Shettima added. “While my thoughts and prayers are with you, I pray Almighty God to grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed and quick return to health for the injured.”

CONTAINING FUEL TANKER EXPLOSIONS IN NIGERIA

Sir Kelly Elisha Between 2009 and 2025, a spate of 16 years, Nigeria recorded almost 174 fuel tanker explosions. The explosions claimed almost 2000 lives with the highest fatalities of 266 recorded in 2024. In that year alone181 lives were lost in one single incident in Mania Taura, the local government of Jigawa state. As Nigeria was trying to grapple with the explosion that occurred in Dikko, Niger state on Sat Jan 18, 2025, which claimed over 100 lives, another disaster took place in Enugu with a number of deaths recorded. The victims of the explosions are mostly gullible people who rush to the scene to scoop spilt fuel. A common thread in the explosions is the refusal of the people to learn some lessons from previous incidents. For instance, as the gory experience of the Dikko incident was still fresh, the people defied the pain to race to the scene of the Enugu tanker explosion. As a response to the incessant and unfortunate development, the Nigerian government has set up a powerful panel to unnravel factors responsible for the explosions. Perhaps the most important part of the terms of reference is how to prevent a recurrence of fuel tanker explosions. The government can not gloss over the issue responsible for such incidents. When such explosions occur in places of high human density, there is the temptation on the people to rush for what they think is manna from heaven. The facts remain that most Nigerian roads are bad coupled with reckless driving and outright negligence of the drivers. We also play down the issue of poverty, greed, and ignorance. It is our considered opinion that there is a need to develop a regulatory framework. The Federal Road Safety Corps will need a special task force to enforce traffic laws as they affect articulated vehicles as well as set up traffic stops. As it stands, the country can not allow a situation in which people are burnt alive. A stop should be put to this.

ANOTHER TANKER EXPLOSION KILLS 15 IN ENUGU, SOUTHEAST NIGERIA

Barely a week after more than 86 people were killed in a tanker explosion in Suleja, Niger State, another inferno from a petroleum-laden tanker has killed 15 people in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria. The explosion occurred on Saturday around 11:30 am at Ugwu Onyeama, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, just a few kilometers from the Enugu metropolis. Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with many nearby vehicles destroyed and several people killed. “The effects of the explosion were very devastating,” an eyewitness said. “The intensity of the fire was so high that it hindered rescue efforts.” The victims, who were reportedly burnt beyond recognition, are believed to be occupants of the vehicles caught in the inferno. The police and road safety authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties or the cause of the explosion. However, the incident has raised concerns about the frequency of tanker explosions in Nigeria and the need for improved safety measures to prevent such disasters.
