20 ARRESTED FOR HACKING 2025 UTME RESULTS

No fewer than 20 suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja for hacking the 2025 Computer-based test examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). A security source disclosed this in a statement, revealing that the suspects are part of a syndicate believed to have over 100 persons who specialize in hacking the computer servers of examination bodies like JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO). The security source said, “While the controversy raged, little did the public know that the DSS had been covertly monitoring and investigating this dangerous web of attacks. The investigations led to the arrest of over 20 persons across the country, with arrests still ongoing.” The source explained that the hackers mounted routers within the vicinity of targeted CBT centers, which would override JAMB platforms, making it easy for special candidates who paid to get answers to the questions. The source further disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that several members of the syndicate own private schools and colleges and make huge sums of money from their special centers. “They fear that fully integrating WAEC/NECO for CBT type of examinations will ruin their illegal business,” the source stressed. The suspects allegedly charged between ₦700,000 and two million Naira for their services. The source added that no case of complicity had been established against the seven JAMB staff who supervised the Service Providers at the two locations. The investigation is ongoing.

SIX STATES WITH HIGHEST CASE OF MALPRACTICE IN 2025 UTME REVEALED

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed the six states with the highest cases of malpractice in the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). According to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Anambra and Lagos states recorded the highest cases of examination malpractice. Anambra topped the chart with 14 arrests, while Lagos followed with nine arrests. Thirteen incidents of impersonation and one case of mismatched photographs were recorded in Anambra. In Lagos, suspects were apprehended for impersonation, spaying, and illegal possession of mobile phones during the exam. The other states with high cases of malpractice are Delta with eight cases, Kano with seven cases, and Kaduna and Rivers with six cases each. Oloyede disclosed that 80 examination malpractice suspects across different states are being interrogated. The JAMB registrar also revealed new fraud techniques developed by applicants, including biometric manipulation, use of combined thumbprints between candidates and impersonators, double registration, and attempts to substitute oneself with an impersonator. These, he said, were done in collusion with some Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers. In one instance, a blind candidate hired a blind undergraduate to sit the examination on his behalf. Oloyede emphasized JAMB’s zero-tolerance policy on exam malpractice and promised to continue innovating to maintain exam credibility. “We have 39,834 unreleased UTME results, with 1,426 under scrutiny and processing. Out of these, 96 candidates’ results were withheld due to exam malpractices,” Oloyede said. He added that four CBT centers were delisted and blacklisted due to technical deficiencies and substandard performance.

TRAGEDY STRIKES AS CANDIDATES DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENT EN ROUTE TO UTME

Several candidates travelling to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have died in a road accident on the Oyo-Ogbomoso highway in Oyo State. The accident, reportedly caused by suspected brake failure, occurred while the candidates were en route to their exam centres. The exact number of casualties and identities of the victims have not been disclosed. However, news of the crash has sparked widespread grief and condolences on social media, with many users expressing their sadness and frustration over the incident. Some candidates on social media questioned the policies of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), with @omoiyaonikoko1 saying, “The JAMB registrar needs to resign… What’s wrong with the good old ways of writing JAMB?” @EsievDarneal lamented, “Everything is wrong with this country… Is it not better students go to the respective school they apply for to write their entrance exam?” @Kickflowdown expressed frustration over the examination process, saying, “I don’t understand JAMB… Has it changed to buying JAMB form and being sent to Zamfara like NYSC?” @comrade_lekan1, who claimed to have written an article against JAMB’s policies last year, called for the board to be sued, citing concerns over the safety and well-being of candidates. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and logistics of the UTME, with many calling for reforms and changes to the examination process. As investigations into the accident continue, many Nigerians are mourning the loss of young lives and demanding action to prevent such tragedies in the future.

JAMB DELAYS 2025 UTME REGISTRATION, NOW TO COMMENCE ON FEBRUARY 3

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a change in the commencement date for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration, shifting it from January 31 to Monday, February 3, 2025. This decision was made to implement crucial changes to its registration templates, following the recent suspension of certain law programs in selected universities. According to JAMB, the modifications are necessary to ensure the integrity of the examination process. The Board discovered that some Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers had secured approval through fraudulent means, prompting further scrutiny and disqualification of such centers. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, acknowledged the disruption this may cause to candidates and other stakeholders, saying, “The Board acknowledges the disruption this may cause to candidates and other stakeholders and sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience.” He assured that the additional time would be used to implement all necessary adjustments to facilitate a seamless registration process. The registration period will now run from February 3 to March 5, 2025, with the mock UTME scheduled for April 5, 2025, and the main UTME starting on April 25, 2025.
