BAYELSA GOVERNOR PRESENTS 31 VEHICLES TO SECURITY AGENCIES

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has presented 31 brand new operational vehicles to service commanders of security agencies in the state. The formal handover ceremony took place on Thursday in Government House, Yenagoa, after the 38th state security council meeting. Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, disclosed in a statement that Governor Diri said the state government procured the vehicles to enhance the day-to-day operations of the agencies in the fight against crime in the state. Daniel Alabrah further quoted Governor Diri as saying, “It was a recurring decimal during our security council meetings for security commanders to request for vehicular support. Today, we are gladly able to put this to rest.” The vehicle distribution breakdown includes six vehicles for the Nigeria Police Force, with one allocated to the Commissioner’s office. The Directorate of State Services received four vehicles, including one for the State Director. Both the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy got four vehicles each, including one for the Brigade Commander. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps received three vehicles, while the Nigerian Air Force, Federal Road Safety Commission, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigerian Correctional Services, and Nigeria Immigration Service each got two vehicles. Daniel Alabrah also quoted Governor Diri as charging the service commanders to redouble their efforts in tackling crime and ensure good maintenance of the vehicles. “Let’s work together to deepen the rule of law and governance in the state,” Diri emphasized. On behalf of the security agencies, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sunday Idu, appreciated Governor Diri’s gesture, saying it would accelerate their efforts and boost their capacity to fight crime. Mr. Idu assured the governor that the security agencies would collaborate with the state government to deepen the rule of law and governance in the state.

AKWA IBOM STATE POLICE COMMAND LAUNCHES ENFORCEMENT DRIVE FOR THIRD-PARTY INSURANCE

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an enforcement drive to ensure that all vehicles in the state have third-party insurance coverage. This move is in line with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act. Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the commitment to enforce the mandatory third-party vehicle insurance from February 1, 2025, as directed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. “Vehicles found without valid third-party insurance will be seized and taken to the nearest police formation. Such vehicles will only be released upon the presentation of valid insurance documents,” said DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has thrown his weight behind the enforcement drive, emphasizing the importance of third-party insurance in ensuring the safety and well-being of road users. The Governor also directed the state’s Ministry of Transportation to work closely with the police command to ensure the success of the enforcement drive. However, the enforcement drive has raised questions about the roles of different agencies in checking vehicle particulars. In Nigeria, three organizations are responsible for checking vehicle documents: the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), and the Police. The overlap in responsibilities has led to confusion among motorists, with many calling for a clarification of roles and streamlining of responsibilities. Despite the confusion, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s enforcement of third-party motor insurance compliance is a step in the right direction towards ensuring road safety and accountability. Motorists are advised to cooperate with the authorities and ensure their vehicle documents are up to date to avoid penalties and fines.
